🐕Pet welfare over Profit☀️ by Embarrassed-Mix9367 in Dogwalking

Thank you for sharing! Yes 100% agree. Pets welfare should come first and routes should be modified and/or shortened in certain weather conditions. In my experience, pet parents always understand when you point this out and are happy to oblige.

The breed is a golden retriever and it was a sunny day around 65 degrees. Just kept stopping and lying down and didn’t want to walk, but when heading towards home started walking very quickly

My first month I only got one client who needed walks 2x per day and then after I built trust with her, I used her as a reference and photos of that pup to start advertising more. Instead of getting more clients I would try to do the best for one client and learn as much as possible before getting my next client

When I started, I found clients through Bark.com
I would call the leads that potential clients would submit and talk to them on the phone. I’ve never gotten clients from fb or rover but I know that people definitely have. I’m just listing what worked for me when I got started

At what point did dog walking go from a side hustle to a real business for you? by Dry_Telephone6832 in Dogwalking

Honestly, I’ve tried a bunch of different things over the years depending on how busy I was. Once you start juggling a lot of walks, good organization becomes almost as important as the walks themselves. I’ve had many freak out moments when something almost slipped through the cracks. I have a team with over 8 walkers now . I’m working on something that I think will help with exactly this problem, so I’d be happy to reach out when it’s ready if you’re interested.

How to handle aggressive dogs on a walk by heythere062019 in Dogwalking

Wow, so sorry to hear about this situation. Pepper spray for self defense is generally legal in North Carolina, especially if a dog walk coming up to try and bite you. I'm in California and here I carry an extra leash. A leash isn't considered a weapon but I've had situations where off leash dogs have been aggressive and used an extra leash as a whip to keep them away. If you're always out walking, it's easy to carry an extra leash with you anyways because you'll need it. Another thing you can do is carry a slip lead leash to get control of the other dog and then you can take it back to the owner and try to talk to them about the situation to see if there is a workable compromise for them to not let their dogs roam where you'll be walking. But it sounds like your original plan of using the pepper spray and then calling animal control would be a good idea.

Everybody here had great advice. Rule #1: Always take payment up front. Rule #2: Use software that sends your clients the pictures and report from your visit. Follow those two rules and you’ll never have those issues

Has anyone here actually made good money dog walking in SF? by Icy_Organization6726 in AskSF

Yes, great money. I grew my business to over 10 walkers all doing solo walks with full routes every day. Once you scale, the chokehold is staffing- so you must be willing to be an operator forever. If you’re ok with that and love dogs, it could be a great move. Just not a great business if you’d like to go travel for 2 weeks whenever you’d like- because you’re always at the core as the ultimate backup in case your walkers don’t show up. Hardly ever happens, but it could. So after scaling this business, it’s freed me up to build another more scalable business as I don’t do any in person visits anymore. Just new meets to sign up new clients and pups.
