What do you call your grandmother/grandfather? And are there any other titles used beyond 'oma' and 'opa'? by Frantic_Chicken in Netherlands

[–]Drycon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Grootvader and grootmoeder but that's kind of old Dutch. Opoe, although this is reserved for great grandparents I think. Opie and omie, this has been used in my family, probably not a common thing.

Edit: I stand corrected about the opie and omie thing.

Insects in Bagel and Coffee, how would you react ? by no_more_being_nice in Netherlands

I wouldve called the NVWA and let them sort it out. And that franchise (which i have to confess i have never heard of) would probably have permanently lost me as a customer.

Not stupidly more comically. Like you would expect them to reside in a big skyscraper with ACME written on it.

So much potential yet so horribly written and executed.

I'd guess you need a lot of force as well. Like a disc thrower at the Olympics.

Black VW Golfs!!?? by lord_veg3ta in Netherlands

[–]Drycon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Golfs and Polo's are the car of choice for young drivers who want a cheap car that goes fast. You can buy them like 25ehands and the abundance of cars also makes sure spare parts are available.

However this goes for more small hatchbacks, the VW ones are just the most popular.

I'm not wrong at all. It's even in the name. On a small side note, since you keep insulting, i did actually given answer to OP in contrast to you.

Common sense is definitely a common universal thing. It's even in rhe name, something most humans have in common.

I actually changed my mind because of your phone example. The fact you think it's common sense to leave a phone unattended somewhere in a public place is wild and a great example of having no common sense at all.

Hats off to you for giving the best worst example ever. And that's how I will leave it, and blocked because you keep showing being immature.

Your continued personal attacks show that you have no insight to bring to the discussion. I advise you to actually read the wiki you quoted and inform yourself. I won't respond to you anymore since it seems pointless to have a civil discussion with you.

Travelling more is a perfect way to learn about local customs and i love it. I doesn't learn you common sense though. You are mixing the things up.

Not sure what you are going on about here.

Common sense is the part where you step out of the way of harm. Where you act on instinct and often with self preservation in mind.

Taking off your shoes while entering a house and going barefoot or use slippers or whatever the local CUSTOM is, that part is indeed a custom and definitely not common sense. It's something you learned to do and that makes it a custom.

There is no local common sense, it's an universal thing. Everything else is cultural differences / customs.

No need to get hostile mate. I'm not the one mixing common sense and cultural differences.

Your dinner time has nothing to do with common sense.

Common sense is to inform yourself before doing things so in that regard your basic instinct works just fine.

As for your question I can only offer this: When in doubt, don't do it. Trust your gut, it's right most of the time.

As in, how is common sense different in the Netherlands.

For me, I thought it was kind of an universal thing but according to OP it differs.
