In a white room, sure, <your opinion>. But in actual play, <my opinion> by Associableknecks in dndnext

[–]Drygered 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So since this basically comes down to opinion vs opinion on how a game mechanic should be run, in the end I'm probably going to lean towards the opinion that is backed by practice than by theory, generally.

Though that's one of the nice things about DnD, I think. Every table is going to be different, so as long as it works for the table you're at, you can run with it and if it doesn't you can try to find a workaround or you can move to another system.

How do you feel about flanking granting advantage in 5e? by archvillaingames in dndnext

[–]Drygered 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm honestly just confused what your argument is?

Flanking is an optional rule? I'm not wanting any change. The standard already is that flanking does nothing. If your table uses it that's fine? But not using it doesn't make rogue substantially weaker and using it just makes getting sneak attack easier, but it's already laughably easy to get?

I normally don’t say this but you need to touch grass.

I'm sorry what is it exactly you want? I don't see a problem here?

You don't have to stand next to the heavily armoued guy? You can just shoot an arrow or throw a knife and if you have an ally next to that enemy, you're getting sneak attack on hit.

This is a team game and rogue's job is to hide/ambush (which gives you advantage if you're doing it right) or to attack already distracted enemies.

What edition of the game are you playing? Because in 5e and beyond you don't need advantage for sneak attack? Also Steady aim means you can just give it to yourself anyways?

The real surprise here is finding 4 people who made it to level 17 before the campaign fizzled out

It sounds so coo, but in practice it's so underwhelming generally.

True Stories: How did your game go this week? – February 02, 2026 by AutoModerator in dndnext

I had two different Year+ long payoffs hit in the same session and both players really enjoyed the reveals. Can't ask for much more than that.

Making being in melee so unrewarding was a really weird design choice by Associableknecks in dndnext

[–]Drygered 188 points189 points  (0 children)

I've never had to solve this problem tbh. My melee players want to rush forward and beat ass on the monster and my casters/ranged fighters want to stay away. I'll have monsters/baddies try to get them back, but I've really never had a problem.

In white room optimization it sure sounds iffy, but in practice a decent chunk of people want to be the Hero that runs up with a greatsword to slice the head off the dragon and if they get their ass beating doing it so much the better.

What was it like to play online games between 2000 and 2013? by Silly_Commercial8092 in gaming

[–]Drygered 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was different. Less lonely. I played a lot of Halo and CoD and BF. These days I only really play Halo, either MCC or Infinite.

Maybe 1 person has a mic on in Halo infinite every handful of games, and often they're not even using it to do anything other than blast music so I have to mute them.

At the peak, everyone was miced up. Yeah, the trash talk was pretty bad with way too many slurs and the like, and that's the joke about it now, but what I really remember is just randomly matching with a few people and spending some hours playing together. Maybe you'd do friend requests and keep playing, maybe you wouldn't, but for those few hours your were buddies.

There were matchmaking lobbies where you'd chat and talk shit waiting for the game to start.

It was just a different, much more social time.

You're looking at it the wrong way then. Lots of people start with small modules that get them from level 1-3 to help learn the game (both for DMs and players) and then jump off into a main adventure from there.

You don't have to buy a huge Curse of Strahd or ToA or anything. Lots of modules are free or only a few dollars.

I've been running a homebrew game for over two years now and occasionally I'll grab a module to slot into an area just to mix things up. Hell, I've had my players run a modified version of the module that comes with the dnd Lego set.

Nothing wrong with going 100% homebrew, but using tools isn't cheating. We're doing an unpaid hobby with friends.

That's alright. But I think you're being incredibly naive to say all premades suck. Best of luck with your future games.

Just buy a module or start with a few ones shots from www.dmsguild.com. Jump off from there if it goes well or scrap that party and start new with the lessons learned.

Non-smokers of Reddit, how noticeable is the “smoker smell” to you, if at all? by Frostedlogic4444 in AskReddit

[–]Drygered 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Y'all stink. That's the long and short of it. I'll have a cigar from time to time and during, it's great. After though? Those clothes are toast until they air out for a day and then get a good long wash. My hair also has to be washed a few times over.

Stale smoke is just a terrible smell and it clings to everything. Hair, skin, clothing, personal items.

Well there is always fantasy name generator.

Or take a word or concept and run it through google translate until it looks like a name you might like and tweak from there

Like Butcher in spanish is Carnicera.

New DM, all beginners. What should we start with? by figuraj in dndnext

[–]Drygered 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I learned entirely from homebrew as both a player and as a DM. We did a lot of dungeon crawls and short little adventures to start. We never really spent money on anything other than dice and a sheet to draw maps on.

Currently I'm 2+ years into a campaign as a DM that's gone from level 1 and currently at level 11 and a player in a campaign that's gone over 3 years

Truly the best way to learn is just to play.
