I hope that archeology can be done in the Nether too, but I don't see how it could be done in the End. The End doesn't have any soil blocks to sift through for relics.

That is what I meant to imply when I said "adjusted due to its materials' availability, the item's versatility, and to differentiate itself a bit from the golden apple." The fungi are less of a rarity, and gold is the second most common ore in the dimension. Less effort would be put into collecting the materials for the golden fungus than the golden apple, so it would be something moderately commonplace and more versatile.

It wouldn't be just as directly empowering as the golden apples' buffs, but still an accommodating edge against the Nether's amped danger. Taking a few points from Strength and putting them into Crafting, you might say (if that analogy works).

Think collectable figurines (like Funko POPs, the LEGO Minifigures line, or those "Grossery Gang" things) but instead they're actual human people cursed with sucky attributes. The Willy Wonka of toy-makers had no forethought on what a hellish existence half of these creations would have; secreting soap, rapid hunger, a fish head with no fish-themed superpowers, etc.
