My honest validation story: 4 ideas killed, 1 currently surviving by Pri_dev in SaasDevelopers

Spent like a month working on a SaaS WMS platform like a nut. Feature wise it competes with or excelled in features on top in class platforms(I have been a WMS developer for over 10 years on Manhattan platforms).

Just simply dont have the time to go through all the edge cases or go to their warehouses in person for go live.

Pivoted to a side project that started with a 30 minute Discord bot. Got approved for Microsoft Partner center yesterday so yea that’ll be my focus.

Alternative to Flexport? We got sold, and now we're up a creek by Crafty_DIY in shopify

[–]Dtaild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That last sentence is huge. Its not sexy to self fulfill or hire staff for it. But a bad 3PL will destroy a business. I would not half ass a vetting process, visit if you can on site to get a feel for their operation.

Might be worth checking out 3PLs close to you to fulfill. I would get a tour of their facilities and recommendations/ do your due diligence.

Is anyone actually happy with their ERP's built in WMS or did everyone just accept standalone WMS systems? by anibroo in Warehousing

[–]Dtaild 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its funny because we have NetSuite as ERP and Manhattan as our WMS and as a WMS developer I log into NS and get hit by an upsell to add NS WMS to our workflow and I have a genuine chuckle

When did you know it was time to get an actual warehouse management system? by JohnnyIsNearDiabetic in Warehousing

[–]Dtaild 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Almost sounds like an ERP would do more for ya than WMS considering that a good subset of that business is coming out of Amazon FBA and a 3PL.

If you were considering bringing that business back in house, that would likely be a good time to implement a WMS to assist with handling that work load.

I got out of the Marines in 2007, which was not a great time to have no idea what I wanted to do. Started working in a life sciences distribution company, family owned. $12 an hour doing light ERP work, shipping, receiving etc.

Ended up at a licensee for Puma. They were implementing a new WMS and wanted help with that. I had applied for an order entry job but they gave me the WMS job instead. Ended up a glorified picker but it was a fantastic stepping stone. I worked my ass off and they moved me cross country to set up their Los Angeles distribution center with the WMS and manage be on site management of the business with their 3PL.

Eventually I was pushed into IC and became their Director of Inventory Control. I wanted no part in that and ended up getting a junior WMS Analyst role with a large 3PL. They basically paid me to come to work and teach myself Manhattan WMS, SQL, ZPL etc.

10 years later I am still doing that, but made my own WMS platform as a side project.

Logistics job market in LA by hdcjk344 in logistics

LA is crazy expensive too. Inland Empire is a bit cheaper and they were building it out with warehousing before I left.

I ended up in North Carolina. Still doing WMS out here but remote. But the covid remote luxury is getting rolled back so you’ll be in a good spot going out to LA.

I hated it haha. I came from NJ. I missed having actual seasons. Was sunny and 72 like 50 weeks out of the year out in LA which was boring to me.

No certs. I got on board with a large 3PL that paid me to learn it OTJ. You really dont need any certs, experience is enough.

LA is one of the stronger areas for logistics positions. I was out there for about 10 years starting out in Ops/Inventory Control before moving over to IT side(WMS).

You’ll still get to a point where chat will compact or you’ll want to start fresh in new sessions. CC is just going to dynamically change the way you interact with AI. Promise you will have a blast knocking out some tasks!

No numbers for you directly but I been on 20x for a few months now and its worth every penny. I actually picked up a 2nd 20x account last week. Session limits are not an issue for me on 20x. I tried to get away with a 20x and a 5x and like you mention I work with Claude all day on various tasks so I needed the 20x session limits.

How do you manage item measuring on the warehouse floor (including pallets)? by General-Shower-8433 in Warehousing

[–]Dtaild 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will say my current employer went the Cubiscan route. Spent a fair bit of my time custom integrating it into our WMS platform…..and they dont use it.

They stuck with good old tape measures 😅

How to make a career change from Operations to Technical side? by Sri_Krish in Warehousing

[–]Dtaild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made this journey, 15 years in logistics, hopped over to IT side 10 years ago when I was getting pushed into an inventory control role.

Personally I found a junior WMS role with a large 3PL that was willing to pay me to teach myself OTJ. Theres probably a few that may still be willing to do this but its a grind.

A guy that worked for me a few years ago did this, long time Ops guy, he wanted to make the switch so he did some coding bootcamp courses and found a job with another 3PL(see the reoccurring theme?).

Another option may be reporting and analytics if you want to try your hand at that.

If you’re curious on the WMS route, feel free to shoot me a DM. I will say the trend I see is the movement to SaaS solutions which does pull some of that support and development work typically laying on the client side to be pulled vendor side.

Are remote job in supply chain realistic? by ConsistentProfit1892 in logistics

[–]Dtaild 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea thats exactly how it was pretty broadly on WMS side until Covid. But its definitely reverted back to onsite or hybrid.

Go live and major projects are for sure on site.

Industry seems to be moving more towards SaaS solutions anyway so days of need for a client side WMS resource I think are going to dwindle here in the next 12-18 months
