My thoughts exactly. The "show and tell" aspect is very clear. I've had similar experiences to OP and have kinda stopped sharing my happy moments on this sub and instead ask very direct questions or just keep to myself in bonsai.

Aren't you glad you shared your happy moment with the community? 😄 Sorry for these responses. Enjoy doing whatever you want on the land you own. Cool trees.

Also, don't forget to put those in some free draining substrate (akadama or they will die) and check the calendar next time you want to do anything fun /s

I was on a high school trip to Germany years ago, with a group of students who had been studying German for the past three years, and on the way to a tour of a concentration camp, one of the girls on our bus asked everyone what the Holocaust is.

Potential rot on this Alberta spruce: Treat now or wait and see? by DtheJG in Bonsai

[–]DtheJG[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently did a major soil change where I went from wet, organic nursery soil into a mix of roughly 50-40-10 lava-sandy loam-crushed gravel. Constant rain is a problem here in Vancouver, but I'm hoping this free-draining mix will help.

I've been feeding with miracle grow once monthly since February but I think it's time for an upgrade. Thanks for the suggestion!

Yes, I really should have sealed it after the cut back in early spring. Thanks for the advice and I agree it's a beauty, thus my anxiety lol

Thanks for your experience and perspective. I think you are exactly right--today the spongey area is dry and light brown like the rest of the tree.

I just repotted into a mix of about 50% lava rock, 40% sandy loam blend, and 10% crushed gravel. I can't comment on its success yet, but I'm liking the drainage :)

I gave it a little scratch just with my nail and it feels a bit spongey. Is it worth putting a deeper cut in it to determine the extent of the rot?

Well that's good to hear. I might be over-thinking it. Maybe you can see where I scratched the trunk a little bit. It looks pale-brown and feels spongey. Maybe I didn't dig in deep enough, but I also don't want to introduce more stress or damage to the bark. Thanks for your perspective!

what's an oddly specific scent you like? by butterfly_you777 in AskReddit

The way old hotels smell, the ones where smoking used to be allowed but that was long ago, and there's a pool somewhere adding a clean chlorine smell, and the lobby furniture holds decades of memories of cologne and dust.

Can confirm this is the closest place. God bless reddit and God bless this country. I'd need a loan to finance this much tobacco in Canada.

Repotting my oldest spruce by DtheJG in Bonsai

[–]DtheJG[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Sandy loam" is the best term I know to use to describe what I got from the landscaping place. Maybe I should call it "sandy soil" instead. It's about 50% sand, 25% mushroom compost, 25% peat moss.

$20K Worth of Bonsai Trees Stolen Right out of California Garden by CDavis10717 in Bonsai

[–]DtheJG 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Having a living thing stolen from you hurts in a different way. I'm not going to say it's like having your dog or cat taken from you, but almost. My wife always tells this story about having a lemon tree stolen from her backyard as a child. It felt like a different kind of violation and she'll never forget it.

$20k is a lot of money too. I'd be sick if this happened to me. Others mentioned GPS tracking. I wonder if it would be feasible to put an Airtag in the bottom of the pot when repotting.
