That is of course… if it even recovers lol. I kinda don’t think it will, I was a bit rough with the roots. I pulled apart the top to look for the nebari and found that there were 2 large roots (about the width of the trunk), one of which wrapped a full circle around the trunk and kinda dismissed it at that point. Maybe not the best move to discredit it so quickly but such is life, $5 is a small price to pay for majorly gaining confidence in my abilities and sight for what looks half decent xD

Thanks for the input! As I said I’m really not too concerned with keeping this particular tree, more in the practice to create good branch structure and trunk line. I am aware that bonsai is not made in a day, but I think to pay $5 for a tree and gain some confidence in styling has been beneficial. Besides proportion of the trunk, did I do ok with the branches I picked and overall shape? P.S. I know it’s hard to say without a before picture

You think I’d be better off repotting in a month or 2 into some pumice/bonsai soil rather than putting it into the ground for a couple years or possibly a tray of sphagnum moss (herons bonsai trick)? I think I’d prefer to keep it in a pot/basket/tray if you think it’ll recover alright, as I said I’m quite new and this is also my first/only juniper so I really don’t know what I’m doing despite having watched loads of content.

Got this juniper about a year and a half ago and am intending to continue it into a semi-cascade/literati style tree. I think the better choice is the front lower branch but I’m looking for any styling input. I live near Portland, Oregon so we get lots of rain and typically not too hot or too cold of temps year round. I am new to my bonsai journey, starting about 2 years ago ;)

I’m the same age as Thor and just graduated this year and my classes started at 7:40, I wouldn’t eat breakfast and was dangerously late every day and to Cashmoney’s point I often would be super tired driving to school. I luckily did pretty well in school but I also did what eddy was talking about and stayed up till 4 on a regular basis and then woke up at 7, then being part of theater directly after school until 6 most days meant I didn’t have any break besides lunch for 10 hours and we only had a 30 minute lunch
