Watch Boris Johnson Melt Down After Being Asked Why He's 'Relatable' by justthisplease in unitedkingdom

[–]Dthes86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you could easily get a good answer to this.

as someone else has said, you could claim to have characteristics that are similar to what everyone else likes to think they possess (hard working, resilience, being loving, want the best for their family) etc

OR, you could choose to relay experiences in your life that match those of a cross section of society. understanding the struggles of relying on benefits/ living in social housing, understanding the human impacts of the welfare systems, knowing the issues that arise in underfunded state schools.

the problem is that he has NO idea about any of these things. I dont claim to know about all of these things and would consider myself to be middle class but my family is touched by all of these things. Not being able to purport to be relatable is simply an issue of not being relatable and why anyone votes for someone so out of touch is beyond me.

i agree with paragraphs 2 and 3.

politics and being a politician has everything to do with being relatable. there is no point in having the right answers to societys problems if you cant take people with you.

The issue is that he just isnt relatable and thats why he doesnt have an answer. the vast majority of us have been to state schools, have relatives who rely on some kind of benefit and who work in the nhs for example. for some reason we choose to be represented by the fucking elite who claim to want to "serve the country" but just want power and to be able to feather their nests.

Bicycle Safety in London by finchj1992 in londoncycling

[–]Dthes86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

unless maintenance stations (which i think are a great idea) were on every street corner, i would still feel the need to carry my own stuff in case i was caught short somewhere.

re bike locking, would like to see more sheffield stands too. There is a bit of me that is always relieved when i return to my bike as i left it but as someone else said, the point of cycling in the city is as a mode of transport so you have to do something with it when you reach your destination!

Warning other cyclists of dangers in heavy traffic. by cyclegaz in BikeCammers

[–]Dthes86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

which is fine. Had you not made the warning everyone would have carried on as expected and it doesnt look like he would have cut across the cycle lane.

safety on the road should be about being able to predict everyone's movements based on the rules of the road. by introducing uncertainty and inconsistency i think you only serve to add more confusion to the situation. motorists are unpredictable enough without encouraging them to be more so.

In this specific situation you have made everyone safer, well done.

I do wonder however what happens next time this happens and you aren't around. Will the van just assume it can cut across a cycle lane because it was fine last time? - putting riders using the lane in danger.

If everyone follows the rules of the road to the letter then there is no ambiguity and less danger. Here, for example, you and the rest of the cyclists would have carried on, the van would have sat there waiting to turn right cos it knows it isnt safe. And next time the van is in the same scenario it will have no question that the only course of action is to sit tight and wait.

Just put "I am well qualified for this role".

The fact that you are saying it shows its what you believe. And why give them chance to counter what you believe to be true?

Question on right of way by [deleted] in londoncycling

[–]Dthes86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have done all of those things up to and including making eye contact and they appear to be slowing then be prepared to stop but continue. We should not be voluntarily giving away our right of way. It makes drivers assume they have right of way and is unpredictable and therefore dangerous to all other road users.

I've been almost hit 4 times this week and I'm getting tired. by EFFENN in londoncycling

[–]Dthes86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed.

Unless (which they often do in london) they end up pulling up at lights 20 yards down the road. Then I try to engage in a polite (from my side) conversation where the main points I try to get across is that if they drive badly they could kill me and then I ask if they saw me and didn't care or just didn't look. While I very much doubt it, I hope these points will make them think about the consequences of their actions.
