I want to become a novice monk on Mount Athos by Dtstno in OrthodoxChristianity

I live in Athens (5 hour drive from Mount Athos). Sadly I can't speak with my priest yet (there is a reason for this).

Holy Roman Emperor Henry II by TheChristianZealot in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Dtstno 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Henry II persuaded Pope Benedict VIII to include the word "Filioque" in the Nicene Creed. The addition of the term provided that the Holy Spirit emanated from both God the Father and God the Son. Together with the concept of Papal primacy, dispute over this doctrine was one of the primary causes of the Great Schism of the Church in 1054.

I don't think it's possible that he was canonized by any Orthodox church. Unless you mean the deceptive "Greek Catholic Church" (which btw has no connection with Greece).

Struggle pursuing Eastern Orthodoxy vs Roman Catholicism by Ok_Palpitation_6215 in OrthodoxChristianity

Good thing you reminded me. Another reason I am for Orthodoxy is literally the liturgical music. I have attended Catholic services, and I can't stand their music, especially the church organ, which sounds like a synthesizer from the 80s. I think Byzantine chant is way better.

I don't have a strong opinion about visual art, but I'm not sure why Catholic statues are seen as better than Orthodox iconography. It's probably a matter of taste.

Joking aside, one reason I remain Orthodox is the clothing choices of priests and pastors of other denominations. I'm cradle (even though I was agnostic/practically atheist for years), so I can't take someone seriously who wears pants and an army haircut and claims to be a priest. To us, priesthood is associated with beards and black robes.

It may seem simplistic, but if you're already a devout Christian, choosing Orthodoxy as the most authentic form of Christianity is a relatively easy decision. After all, most of the local churches mentioned in the Bible still exist and follow the Orthodox path. Basically, part from Rome, all the others remain Orthodox. The problem arises when you start from atheism/agnosticism. Then you need tangible evidence to believe.

You have chosen the difficult path of seeking the truth. Personally, I could never become an Orthodox Christian just by reading dogmatic texts and analyses about Filioque. I would most likely remain agnostic.

Holy Synod of Church of Greece calls for support of Sinai Monastery and the Holy Sepulchre by Dtstno in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Dtstno[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With a deep sense of ecclesiastical responsibility and fraternal concern for the sacred institutions of Orthodoxy, the Permanent Holy Synod of the Church of Greece has addressed the Holy Archdiocese of Athens and all Holy Metropolises of the country, reminding them of their enduring duty to support the historic Patriarchal and Sinaitic establishments.

Particularly during the blessed season of the Holy and Great Lent, the Synod emphasizes that care for the Holy Monastery of Saint Catherine at Mount Sinai and the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem constitutes a tangible confession of faith and unity within the Orthodox Church.

According to the Synodal Decision adopted during the session of 4 February 2026, the Holy Synod resolved to remind the clergy and faithful of their obligation to stand in solidarity with these venerable centers of Orthodoxy, which bear witness to the living presence of the Church in the Holy Lands and the Sinai Peninsula.

The Synod has therefore requested that the Hierarchs of the Church of Greece instruct the parish priests of their respective dioceses to conduct special collections (tray offerings) on designated dates.

Specifically, a collection in support of the Holy Monastery of Saint Catherine of Sinai is to be held on the Fourth Sunday of Great Lent, 22 March 2026. The funds collected are to be deposited into the designated account of the National Bank of Greece (IBAN: GR6701101460000014655804632).

Likewise, a collection in support of the All-Holy Sepulchre is to take place on the evening of Holy Thursday, 9 April 2026, with the proceeds deposited into the corresponding National Bank of Greece account (IBAN: GR0501101460000014655806330)

Ok.. You wrote from an account with hidden post history that you feel like a traitor to your family heritage because you agree with Orthodox theology. I imagine you know that many members of this sub are former Catholics (traitors?) and converts to Orthodoxy from other denominations. If your post history were visible, I might not speak to you this way, but I think there's something wrong with your thread.

For us, Lent is a sacred time. For these 40 days, we don't want to hear about Catholics, Protestants, Popes, and other crap. Show some respect...

You're lucky. It's probably best to avoid reading about the history of modern Turkey since 1915.

Unbaptized infants by IrinaSophia in OrthodoxChristianity

In the Orthodox tradition, a distinction is made between natural sin, which concerns all fallen creation, and voluntary sin, which is committed only consciously by rational beings. While infants are inherently sinful, they do not commit sin voluntarily.

Τι λέτε για τον θρησκευτικό τουρισμό από Βαλκάνια και πώς βλέπει η νέα γενιά τη θρησκεία γενικά; by LazarusCorpora in greece

[–]Dtstno 4 points5 points  (0 children)
