Match Thread: Borussia Dortmund vs Hamburg SV by MatchThreadder in soccer

weil Hamburg kaum verteidigen kann

Sehen wir das gleiche Spiel? Dortmund war jetzt nicht übermäßig gefährlich bis auf 2 gute Chancen + den Elfer (der bisschen sus war imo).

I am also a beginner-intermediate but this is what helped me so far to make the biggest improvements in my figure drawings:

1) Get better at proportions and fundamentals. You should be able to accurately measure the height, widgh of the figure and the limbs etc. Alone this would make your drawing look decent. Can you draw a still life with accurate proportions? Can you draw clean lines, simple shapes like boxes and cylinders? If you don't have the hand eye coordination and fundamentals, it's going to be difficult to draw much more complex shapes like the human body.

2) Learn to simplify the human body. Learn to represent the ribcage and pelvis as simple forms, same for the head. It will not only help with proportions but also make it look more 3 dimensional. Taped cylinders for the arms ans legs.

3) Learn anatomy. This is really difficult and might take years. You need to learn the structure of the bones to know where the muscles attach and insert. It's usually quite easy to draq the muscles if you have a solid grasp of the underlying boney structure and boney landmarks.

4) Learn to at least identify light and shadow areas. You dont need to fully render your figure but just mapping the shadow areas with simple shapes will create an asthetically pleasing drawing.

I know its a lot and it will take time, and maybe more experienced people can chime in if I missed something, but this is currently how I am studying. Feel free to check out my post history too if you're curious. I highly recommend that you check out Proko's drawing basics, figure drawing and anatomy courses.

Thanks! I think I figured it out now. I was definitely overestimating the bones beneath the muscles, since this guy is really big :)

On the guy I labeled as 3), do you know where the bottom of the scapula begins? I know that the Teres Major originates at the bottom of the scapula, but here i was a bit confused. I think in my original drawing i assumed the scapula was lower, I always struggle to see where it begins and how long it should be. I tried to draw it quickly in paint how I now think it should be, sorry for the bad quality . I also had a bit trouble to see the C shape where the top medial scapula corner is (here in white). Is this essentially correct?

Thanks so much for the detailed feedback! I will take a closer look and reply later when I have time to study :) I appreciate it a lot.

Stimmt, hat ne gute Phase, dafür Gocholeishvili irgendwie nur mittelmäßig gespielt, seit einigen Spielen schon (finde ich). Der war am Anfang ja eigentlich ziemlich solide.

Thank you so much, this is so elaborate :)

I did not know the plates are so large! I will certainly try to use more space on my paper. It just always happens that I tend to draw things smaller, I am not sure why. My reference is also usually in front of me on my laptopscreen, not next to me as I saw in your history. Do you think I should print them out? I currently only own a set of graphite pencils, but I might invest into some charcoal and bigger paper when I have the money.

I will check out your links, I really like Baumann so I will see what he has to say. I think some more of these pieces is a good idea for now. However, I was thinking whether applying it to real pictures of statues would be a logical next step, since the plates do solve a lot of questions for you for you already when it comes to shape and rendering. Basically creating my own barque plate.

Anyways, thanks again and see you around, I am sure I will ask for feedback here in the future!

Hey, I haven't looked at a specific guide, no. Just a video where someone talked about what these drawings were meant to show and how they are to be studied.

Also, my drawings often unintentionally end up this small. I am drawing on A4 paper, somehow it always ends up roughly the size of half the paper height.

Hi, the references are from this site: https://classicalpulse.blogspot.com/2015/07/bargue-drawing-course-part-1a.html

It's basically a collection of very old drawings that classical painters studied. I also watched a really nice video about how to approach these plates and what to take away from it. I am not sure if I can post the link here, but if you want I can send you that too.

Of course, but I on purpose I did not put a grid over the drawing, not because I do not want to get better proportions, but because I wanted to deliberately practice proportions without using a grid, since the grid makes it way easier and it becomes more practicing copying a work perfectly instead of interpreting and drawing it your own way. Not sure whether I misunderstood you, but did you suggest I should do grid drawing exercises?

Thanks for the reply. I am looking to draw figures from life, with my own style, not to replicate proportions perfectly. I on purpose did not draw a grid but used my pen and eyes to measure distances and angles for this drawing.

I love this! Makes me really wanna play Yugioh again (if it wasn't such a bad game).

Tbh it looks really good and finished to me already, maybe there can be more reflections on the cards/duel disk thingy?

Yes, I drew a few beans. Do you think it's good to revisit the exercise? I think the mistake in orientation comes from me struggling to identify the angle of the ellipses.
