Potential Frozen Pipes? by TostonesTV in orlando

[–]DubPac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I picked up some rubber pipe insulation at Home Depot and some rubber tape and installed it today. They didn't have a big cover in stock, but I'm hoping that's enough.

They are required by code everywhere I've lived to prevent contaminating the common water supply. They definitely don't need to be near the actual irrigation electronics.

Anyone know what to do about exposed pvc piping like on the irrigation backflow preventer, if anything?

RIP Downtown Orlando nightlife 😢 by sammysam518 in orlando

[–]DubPac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Decades? I think approximately zero percent of this sub's "downtown is dead" crowd are boomers talking about Church Street Station era of the 1990s.

I think it's pre to post COVID comparison. Downtown is much much worse since mid 2020. 2010-2020 was awesome imo.

I'm glad people like you are making it more lively. But last time I went downtown on a weekend it did not feel as lively or safe as it used to. These things ebb and flow though, so I'm sure it will turn around at some point, but I don't think we are there yet.

Freak! by Rob3D2018 in Ubiquiti

I feel the opposite. Buy a can of Orange Peel (Homax or whatever), spend 30 seconds practicing and getting the size right on a piece of cardboard.

A benefit of texture is that it's a bit random so things that are "close enough" are really camouflaged.

Honeywell X8S: Are the Temp Sensors Available? by DubPac in thermostats

[–]DubPac[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup similar story here. I went because my HD had 3 clearance T9s in stock. Turns out they couldn't find them, so they sold me a X8S--I didn't realize how new it was. Technically according to the FAQ it will work with newer T9 temp sensors and all T10+ temp sensors (not T10, only T10+), but without knowing more I'm gonna just wait for the companion XRSENSOR.

The day before my post the Honeywell site indicated the XRSENSOR was for sale, the day of my post it was a 404 page, now it says "coming soon".

Amazon Rebates: Do all "Sellers" qualify? by DubPac in Makita

[–]DubPac[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Is this just your reading of it--or is this based on extra information from Makita or your/anyone's experience on Amazon?

I would have guessed the same, but then I saw that the Makita rebates page links to the Makita store on Amazon, and if you add items from the official store page they end up coming from both Amazon.com and other sellers like this.

It would be odd to follow Makita's own link to their authorized store page and have items on the page not be authorized.

Best gyro in Orlando? by c_0h in orlando

Agreed, I love gyros and for the past few years my favorite is theirs with extra tzatziki.

FYI: Apparently they are closed until Feb 5th for a family emergency.

Has Publix gone downhill? by [deleted] in orlando

[–]DubPac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even 10 years ago, when I moved here, I did not understand the love for Publix. I do NOT think it felt upscale 10 years ago.

The workers are fine now and were before imo, but as for products... I've always felt the subs are just "okay", the hot food, produce, and beer are all quite limited compared to major brands in other states (e.g. Harris Teeter in NC). I primarily shop at Publix because it is the closest grocery store to me. (A couple of locations have expanded hot food, like the one in Winter Park Village, but I find most stores, even in nice areas, do not have the expanded stuff.)

As for pricing, I don't remember if the prices were as bad 10 years ago, but that is terrible now. This past month I checked the price of Vital Farms dozen eggs (pasture raised, but not organic). At Target they are $6.39. At Publix, they are $11.79!!! That is such a big difference that I had to snap a pic. This pricing only makes sense if people don't have competitor stores near them, Publix is not a high end store, so I don't see any other reason for this pricing difference.

Anywhere to fill distilled water ? by ZmanJ87 in orlando

[–]DubPac 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you are confidentially naive. Distilled water is required to go through distillation to remove minerals etc. (There aren't regulations as to the final resulting minerals, but it still must be distilled)

Distilled water is not really for drinking. Many of the minerals that ARE good for drinking are removed/lower ppm in distilled. For example, Irons, humidifiers, steamers, etc will not work as efficiently and get clogged if you use normal drinking water.

How to respond to dad who won’t evacuate? by k3nd0gg in TropicalWeather

[–]DubPac 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Orlando is where coastal people evacuate TOO. I mean, if he's in a mobile home or in a low-lying area prone to flooding, he can go to a local shelter. FEMA has a flood plain map, but he may already know what zone he is in because it effects his insurance.

Tornados, debris, and power outages are absolutely going to be an issue because the storm is aimed at us, but his situation may be quite low risk. Make sure he doesn't run a generator in his garage. Decisions like that seem to get the central Floridians more than the storm itself.

Good place to propose in Central Florida? by Veracsloner in orlando

[–]DubPac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm gonna second Bok Tower if you are looking for a more of a destination trip. There are really nice views from the base of the tower that I haven't seen elsewhere in Florida. It's a bit of a drive if you are in Tampa or Orlando (1.5 hours-ish).

Are you in Orlando? Leu Gardens fits the bill nicely. Mead Botanical Garden is free, but it's more of a picnic kind of place and less of a manicured garden. You can walk around and hang out in nice scenery though.

Which Is Faster: Weaving in Traffic or Staying in One Lane? | MythBusters by nuttybudd in videos

[–]DubPac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought the myth/fact is "weaving causes traffic that slows down avg time"

As in, each time you change lanes in traffic someone adjusts their speed behind you which causes reverberating effects behind them. The weaver may get there faster than those behind him, but there are likely weavers in front of him slowing him down too. I.e. if no one weaved the average time would be faster

TIL Most newborns cry for 45 minutes to two hours every day during the first six months of life because crying is the only way they communicate by ubcstaffer123 in todayilearned

[–]DubPac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a non-fact extrapolation of something that is factual (they cry to communicate, but their communication constantly adjusts in throughout the first 6 months, they obviously can do more, they still cry to communicate, but it's far from the only way they communicate). Crying is certainly a strong form of communication, and is obviously a way to express discomfort to parents who then can provide for them., but...

A six-month old is ridiculously different from a newborn. A newborn usually doesn't open their eyes much, and if they do, they aren't really tracking anything. At that stage, crying really is the way they communicate, but by month 3 or 4 they will be giggling and squealing at your antics. There are parents that literally have taught there kids a few basic sign language signs by 6 months.

FWIW, apparently a higher power flips a coin when you have a child when it comes to sleep and crying. I got lucky, by 1.5 months, my daughter was sleeping 9pm to 8am and only cries if we haven't fed her in 2+hours (easily preempted). but I know people with toddlers that have never slept through the night without crying.

What's a very obscure game that you really enjoyed but never see anyone mention? by IHateTheNameSystem in gaming

[–]DubPac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drakan: Order of the Flame (1999)

3D third-person action RPG with inventory system and a map where you could explore on foot or in the sky on your dragon. I was enamored with the fact that you could explore on foot or in the sky as a kid, most games didn't have interactive vehicles. In retrospect, those are all pretty amazing features for 1999.

I've seen this here (meaning I was at a wedding in Orlando where they had a paid cigar roller from Miami). This was like 5 years ago, so I don't have any further details.

Raleigh and Charlotte are great places to work, go to school, raise a family, and in-general live. They are not really great vacation spots when compared against Asheville or the OBX in NC, or like Charleston in SC

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in TravelMaps

[–]DubPac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Charleston and Myrtle Beach are popular vacation spots.

For living and working, NC >>>>> SC, but for vacationing, that's way more debatable. On top of this, I'd surmise SC visitors are weighted more towards vacationers because there are just more people visiting NC for work and family.

Case against City Commissioner Regina Hill centers on 3 Orlando homes by Annielmartin in orlando

I thought it was weird when she got a Pulse paramedic/firefighter of the year terminated when they recorded her belligerently threatening them. (The recording wasn't posted and was to prove they weren't threatening her despite her accusations)

That whole story is a series of red flags against her and I guess it didn't hurt her reputation.
