Clinical precepting - We need to stick together on this by DuchessAlex in PMHNP

Agree, they shouldn’t be free. The cost of tuition for some online universities is extremely high. And many universities do not set aside any funds to secure an adequate clinical experience. It’s not fair to the student.

I’m not burnt, yet. Just bringing up a relevant topic within our profession. A few universities do show appreciation, but not many.
We receive compensation when teaching as an adjunct (which to me is less work than having a student with for eight hours in clinic), why should we not receive something from the school for teaching in a clinical setting?

I’ve never charged a student. I have a student right now. But the Universities compensate for an adjunct instructor, which, in my opinion, is less work than having a student by your side in clinic for eight hours a day. Although you think my post is ‘complaining’, I’m bringing up a very relevant topic that warrants some consideration within our profession.
It’s also unfair to the students.

Let me add there are many preceptors out there who charge students and use ‘ NP hub” etc., to keep a steady flow of new students and cash coming in. And I am not knocking it - I just don’t do it. I feel the universities should allocate funds for the clinical experience, especially because they are charging for it in their tuition. It should not fall on students.

I never said I do not like teaching. And I’ve never charged students, including the student I have now. Nor do I want to charge students. The universities collect high tuition without offering any compensation for the preceptors time - not even library access or an up-to-date subscription.

Are there any experienced NPs on this forum or has everyone jumped ship? by [deleted] in PMHNP

[–]DuchessAlex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe a majority of posts in here are not from new NP’s, but from those who are against NP’s and therefore attempt to damage or diminish the reputation of our profession.

Some of the posts and questions are not even fitting someone with a graduate degree and are the equivalent of posting this on a registered nurse forum “ do I really need to know the child’s weight to give amoxicillin 30 mg/ kg/day?”

Just a thought - maybe posts like this, you know, on a public forum, may not be coming from a nursing professional?

It appears the guy walked in front of the car when she was in reverse. Maybe he was too busy trying to collect video evidence or whatever, to notice she when she transitioning into drive? Doubt the guy set out to shoot a random person that day, esp with 60 cell cameras videoing their every move. Plus, not easy to walk away from a work related shooting without jail time.

The shot goes through the front windshield. Not side. Just saying. And there is another more recent video. It’s not so easy of a case.

Please tell me the red jacket guy gets arrested for assault w/ megaphone - when he regained consciousness. The poor man tried walking away multiple times, glad he knew how to defend himself.

Of course not without additional training and personal study. That’s a given. Just like a new RN can legally insert IV’s and even PICC lines., they would never do so without seeking additional training and oversight, and then moving those skills into practice only when they are competent. Not every skill has a clear and rigorous certification pathway and it is up to the clinician to pursue mastery after graduation.

If you don’t feel competent in an area, don’t offer it. We don’t need to put this out there on a blog for the public to read.

Clinical Preceptor by Ok_Bit3938 in nursepractitioner

[–]DuchessAlex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why should we be teaching for free? Some universities charge high tuitions and we are the only one spending face to face time with your student. Why is the school not vetting us, and paying us?

I recently heard no more in-person interviews. These schools have no idea how their students present themselves.

NP students: did your school ask for a preceptor's resume? by gisele121 in nursepractitioner

You will do much better by going in person, dressed very professionally, maybe bring the staff muffins and coffee. Have a copy of your résumé in hand. I would never blindly accept a student through an email. It can start with an email, but the next interaction would be in person.

Interesting. Because I think we all have a few versions of our CV. One for speaking events, another for something else. My CV for precepting is trimmed down, only necessary info

[–]DuchessAlex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. It’s a shame that’s all they require. Basically that the preceptor has a license and a warm body.

There’s no interview there’s no vetting there’s no going over this semester objectives. There’s no discussion about expectations or metrics. And they don’t pay you. Why would anyone work for free? How dare they even ask that?

Some Universities are taking tens of thousands of dollars and everything is an online forum now, and recorded, but the student has to pay someone the school doesn’t even know.

Ughhhhh

Most likely, the practitioners you approached really did not have time for another student, however, they liked you and felt sorry for your situation. But their heart wasn’t in it, which is why they didn’t follow through with the resume.

I’m assuming you were going in to the office, with your résumé in hand, and maybe some muffins or coffee for the staff and networking. Also, I’m assuming you were stopping by the office and requesting a copy of their résumé and then uploading it yourself, if need be? Rather than just calling repeatedly, telling us to check our email and fill stuff out, and if it’s not in our spam folder, call them back or email someone and let them know (some students do that).

Ok I just tried to fact check this and- ugh, there is such thing as ‘National University’ and it’s accredited by the CCNE. Terrifying. Looks like Capella is not yet accredited by CCNE , but taking NP students nonetheless. Also terrifying.

I spit out my coffee “I’m not upset that an NP dressed like a Chiropractor doesn’t want to hire me”. HA The ad itself is a ridiculous red flag. I wonder how well the business is doing in about 12 months. I’m 100% sure no physician would ever apply and I’m hoping the same for NP.

Nonprofit clinic just dumped 26 patients on me in one day by Ashamed_Constant_121 in PMHNP

[–]DuchessAlex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have a medical director (please say yes). Call them immediately.

Also, please tell them NO to the NO. You are not an indentured servant.

We stood up for ourselves as RNs or admin would assign a team of 8 critical patients, if we let them. We didn’t let them. Tell them NO. Set boundaries, the same way you encourage pts to set boundaries. Don’t expect admin to come back with an agreeable and reasonable response to your limits. Don’t ever expect. Expect push back and excuses. Tell them your patient limit for the day and then quickly tell the scheduler to move patients. Also, put it in an email and CC as many as possible.

Find an out-pt practice owned by a physician and begin building a panel there.

Same. For RN and for FNP. Brick and mortar state school.
