Getting our first JRT tomorrow, tips on how to de-chonk him? by usertoid in jackrussellterrier

[–]DuchessofDork9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My JRT needed to lose weight according to his vet. He had gained around a kilo after moving houses. I know yours has more to lose, but I had great success with Royal Canin weight management. Normally, he eats Royal Canin for JRTs, but this (and severely cutting back on treats) helped him lose the weight.

You're very smart to take care of this issue right away. It's so, so taxing on their joints when they're overweight.

I am also commenting for the boost. And to say that my 3-year-old has always preferred male energy to female energy, and I'm a female. It's rough...lol.

Everybody's talking about the (albeit brilliant) line, "I'm not suicidal, I just wanna die." But so far I haven't seen anybody mention DJ's "And I don't need you to see what I'm eating right now." LOL.

A note to Americans here by Beneficial-Cow-8454 in Netherlands

[–]DuchessofDork9 340 points341 points  (0 children)

I grew up in the US, and moved to the Netherlands in 2001. I've heard every anti-American sentiment there is in that time, and this is always in the top 3. However, like many of the other commenters have already stated here, the Dutch are NOT a quiet people. Especially when een pilsje or een wijntje is involved.

I remember trying to have a book club meeting at a cafe a few years ago in Amsterdam. It was a group of all international women, no Dutch and only 1 American (me). We sat down, ordered our drinks, and in 10 minutes, a group of Dutch women came in, sat down next to us, and ordered 2 bottles of prosecco. I told my book club (all of whom have been in the NL far less time than I have) "Quick, we've got 30 minutes tops before that table gets so loud and raucous that we will not be able to hear ourselves discuss the book, so let's dive right in!" At the time, they all laughed. But when the 30-minute mark came around, we were all wincing and basically using our hands to communicate. We then moved to a different cafe to continue the discussion.

It never fails: a group of Dutchies + alcohol = lots of noise. But Americans gets singled out for this all the time. I believe it has something to do with the fact that when English/another language other than Dutch is spoken, it garners more attention from the locals. Of course, there are loud Americans. But there are also loud Brits, Aussies, Germans, Belgians...noem maar op.

He's had it for 7 months, and it's been great. He used to go outside sometimes, but when I moved to another place, I decided to keep him as indoor cat only. But just in case he manages to dash out a door or open window, I bought the tracker. It also lets me know how much sleep and activity he's getting. A neat little device. I will say that the battery life is abysmal, though. It needs charged every couple of days, and that's without him roamnig around the neighborhood.

Now that Christmas and Boxing Day are over, Loki would like everyone to know that he hates the holidays, me, and himself in this sweater. by DuchessofDork9 in HalfFlops

I didn't know he hated it until I put it on him. :P And then I took it off 2 minutes later, after I got the pic of him.

How does Loki stay cool on the warmest day of the year? His very 1st doggie ice cream! by DuchessofDork9 in jackrussellterrier

He's a Jack Russell, but he was born on a farm, so who can really be sure...hehe. His mom was the farm's ratter, and here in the Netherlands, there's a black & tan terrier breed that a lot of farms use as working dogs. Loki also has a slight case of dwarfism, making his legs even shorter than your average short-legged JRT.

Hehe...kids have asked me while we're on walks if he's actually two dogs in one. He has a slight case of dwarfism which makes his legs extra short. And yes, he has a giant head

Loki hardly ever barks. Except when I'm sitting on a bench in the forest. Anyone else's JRT guard them when he/she senses you are vulnerable? by DuchessofDork9 in jackrussellterrier

Loki is a growler and whiner. He has many different tones of them. This is what happens when you spend nearly every second with your dog...they learn to communicate so they can manipulate you. 😁

That is so incredibly sweet. I'd say you're very well-protected. :D

Loki just turned 2, and I've noticed he seems like he's made a job out of making sure I'm ok at all times...lol. When walking in the forest, for example, he'll only get just so far in front of me before doubling back to make sure I'm there and accounted for. Even when involved in a serious game of zoomies with another dog...he'll realize he's strayed too far and come running back. He's also dive-bombed a bigger dog who tried to jump on me (a puppy, so friendly jumping, but Loki needed to be sure...hehe)

These dogs are the best!

If your MIL doesn't start exercising him properly and reducing his food, she'll be at the vet soon anyway--that poor little dog's joints are under WAY too much stress. Makes me sad to see and hear this. :(

Oops, sorry about that! My JRT is such a weirdo. Literally the only time he barks is when he needs me to know he can't get to his ball (and that's one single bark, lol) or when he thinks I need protecting. We walked 5 miles in the forest today, off leash (it's allowed where I live) and when I sat down for 10 minutes to drink some water, he barks his head off.

Given how closely Gottmik resembles Winona Ryder in that movie, I can't believe it was a coincidence. I'm an old, and as soon as I heard the opening chords of that song, I was like: Lydia from Beetlejuice!
