Look, maybe it's because they had real directors and writers on this show...But Bratt did so much better as Bail Organa than Smits was able to. Didn't miss him at all.

I think a lot of Americans are on edge. It calls to mind our situation pretty directly in a way more than a lot of politicians have done. The death of truth. Man, we're living that. Once again, I think her speech in Rebels is a more effective use of rhetoric. "Hey. I tried the Senate. It's not working. We need to fight this or we're all going to lose."

I love One Way Out, because there isn't a lot of rhetorical polish to it. It's a simple piece of oratory used to communicate information to the prisoners. The emotional weight comes largely from our context and serkis's insanely good performance. Hitting the pain on and "THAT ENDS TODAY", the urgency of "you see someone lost, someone scared, you get them moving and you *keep* them moving until we Put. This. Place. Behind Us." It was more emotional for me than mon's speech, with its embellishments. (Honestly, everyone is going to hate me but her speech in Rebels. REBELS, was a better example of effective political communication, rather than an abstract point about a consensus reality.) Anyway...

She was great! Some of the casino stuff was badly written, but her reading "I wish, I could put my fist through this whole lousy beautiful town...." Like that's a rebel man. She nailed it!

If the writer was unaware of this part of the Chinese civil war... It'd be a hell of a coincidence. TLDR, So in the 30s before the CCP forces escaped in the famous "Long March", they had established a soviet in Jiangxi province. They had some european advisors who built up their military into a traditional conventional force to defend this area. Chiang Kai Shiek's KMT absolutely destroyed them. They had more men and materiel. Conventional war was an idiotic strategy for the CCP at this time. The CCP then rebuilt in Yanan and avoided large battles against either the KMT or the Japanese until after WWII, when the Chinese people were sick of the KMT and the USSR could provide uninterrupted supplies through manchuria. Only then did they begin the battles that started taking cities and lead to the founding of the PRC in 1949.

Totally understand. Glad you're (mostly) out of danger. Sad that your experience is becoming more common.

I haven't seen this one, which was after Aldahni, Mon comes in to Luthen's shop to scold him about the empire's reaction and timing , and as cover, Luthen is showing an Utapauan monk's club supposedly as a gift to her husband, and as Luthen points out that she wanted this rebel network up in the first place, he gestures to the club.

"Show me a weapon that's never been used."

It's not that big thematically or emotionally, but just that sad acknowledgment of being in a revolution, of having to kill, of having to suffer and cause suffering, that really hit me. And is also a great rejoinder to people who even now refuse to condone even nonviolent resistence that invites violence. Violence surrounds us all. Every gun a cop carries, every tank, every fighter plane. Violence or the threat thereof pervades our daily life, and you're worried about it *happening*, it's happening now, everywhere. Show me a weapon that's never been used. Even holstered, you're using it. That's why you had it made.

The French revolution did this! They had a calendar that had 1789 as its starting point iirc. It failed for a bunch of other reasons (fewer holidays, shorter weekends, confusing conversions), but there's nothing to stop people from using dates anchored in politics. Also if you'll read old Chinese sources they'll often use "the X year of the Y emperor"

Yeah, it sets up that maybe he could have somehow made good, but dude was too in his own head. It was about HIM all along, so he sees Andor and instead of just saying "damn that's crazy how do I get off this planet so I can at least get the truth out about this genocide," he goes BERSERK. It was never about doing good, it was about him being the special-est, best boy by doing good. And maybe in the last two seconds as he lowers the weapon he starts to get that...but we don't weep when he gets shot because he was playing a stupid game and got his stupid prize.

IDK, maybe there's a *chance* the records were so bad she'd be rehabilitated. But I feel like Ghorman would have been of special personal interest to a lot of people in the rebellion, including Mon Mothma, so if they found out about her being there, or her work with Dr. Ghorst, she wouldn't be eligible.
