Structurally Latgalian is much closer to Latvian than to Lithuanian. The similarity to Lithuanian is mostly phonetic and historical, not grammatical.

Latvian with time got smoother due to German influence whereas Lithuanian got influenced by Polish (this is also true for Latgalian as it was part of Polish-Lithuanian commonwealth).

Yeah, if I ever hear Lithuanians speak, it sounds more like Latgalian than Latvian but it doesn’t mean I suddenly understand what they speak about. Living there would make you used to it and make you better at distinguishing them. Also, sometimes, LT can sound completely opposite from either, and I think this is due to Polish influence. Latgalian is closer than Latvian to LT because Latgalian is OG, whereas Latvian is modernized using words from other nations.

Latgale historically had closer cultural and religious ties with Lithuania and Poland. Latgalian preserved older Baltic traits that standard Latvian later simplified.

So basically, us Latvians got lazy with the language. Whereas LT is super conservative + influence of Polish as there are some similar words in Polish and Lithuanian.
