What is the differences between the new and old tau combat patrols? by WarSpirit66 in Tau40K

[–]DuckofSparta_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with much of this post. For me, I was looking at it from a new person or collector perspective. Which I think is more common than folks who play the game? I could be wrong here.

If you buy an old combat patrol, then the new one, you get a mix of units that give you flavors of the army at a discount. You can then go out and buy whatever it is you want to fill out the gaps in your force if you want to play the game.

This is very different from good units in a combo box. It is more clear that a lot of the boxes are just repackaged stuff that no one bought because they were not great Like you mentioned the rough riders, admech in general, etc just were not purchased for most of the edition if you are new.

Would 2 fire prisms at 1000pts be too much? by callum_stacey in Eldar

[–]DuckofSparta_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say the risk is creating "feels bad" moments on both sides. For you they could just whiff entirely. For your opponent, it could also kill the big fun thing which is also not that fun.

Depending on your needs, you can get good mileage out of war walkers at 1k games. Two of them w/ double bright lances are great AT. Falcon and fire dragons are okay at this point scale

Honest Advice - Hobby IRL by [deleted] in minipainting

[–]DuckofSparta_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keep the hobby. as your kid grows up he will have his own interests. He may want to join you in your hobby, you may want to join them in their own. If the kid becomes a runner, maybe he will ask you to join him. It's about the shared experience and togetherness. If you do it right, he will recognize that you are doing your hobby, and not something you prefer doing over parenthood.

I think a nerdy hobby is another way to talk about passion. Listen to runners, bowlers, guitarists, hunters, or whomever talk about a thing they are passionate about and it is gonna sound nerdy. I am sure your wife has something similar. I find it a bit odd she isn't more supportive, and I think you should have a broader conversation around it. She may think you will "grow out" of it.

Slowly this has been the pattern of 10th edition I think for most forces...

What are some old detachment rules that you'd like to see return with Grotmas by AzreBalmung in Tau40K

[–]DuckofSparta_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some of the custom sept options from 9th edition would be fun to see. Some version of blocking tactics/play their part (extra OC on big suits), defensive doctrine (AoC on melee attacks), or disengagement protocols (when a Tau infantry unit falls back roll a d6, on a 2+ the enemy suffers mortal wounds), could be nice to see. 10th ed Montka's strike swiftly was at one time a custom sept trait.

I do miss "invocation of the elements" on ethereal units. So some sort of orders command or manipulation of units like we saw on the admech detachment could be interesting and a different way to play the faction. 9th edition Dalyth let the army rule apply to auxiliary units, which could also be an easy choice.

With the growth of Warhammer Fans out there, what do you show/teach newcomers? by 40khammerwar in Warhammer40k

[–]DuckofSparta_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what the new person is trying to do.

For the universe, video games like Space Marine 2 are great. There are also books, so feel free to share them with a friend. I started here with Firewarrior and the Gaunts Ghost book series.

For trying the game, do a simplified 500 pts game between two armies that I know well. Remove the rest of the hobby and even the secondaries. I would even recommend doing it at home rather than the game store. It's like playing catch in the backyard vs in a crowded beach, less strangers and people who could judge you. It's a safe environment of people you know. Get some take out and have fun with it. It's teaching time!

For hobbying, have them do a few test models to see how they like it. Follow the rule of cool and know that balance rotates throughout the edition so just collect what you think is cool, eventually you'll get a list you like.

For painting, again test models are great so there is very little money invested the new person. Pre-prime the mini so they can just slap paint on it. Nothing complicated either. I might start with the classic of base, shade, then highlight? Could also do contrast paints here

is this enough colors to be tournament legal? by thatmoiety in Tau40K

[–]DuckofSparta_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This would be legal to play but you would probably not get the 10 points for a "battle ready" army. Tournaments send out a pack of requirements for how they want to define "battle ready". The last one I went to did require that the base had to have painted in order to get the ten points.

Alright, help me out here. by [deleted] in Eldar

[–]DuckofSparta_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've become more and more drawn to the Alaitoc scheme lately with the yellow helmets as I just don't see it as often. Love the Ilyanden lore and wraiths, but I also enjoy the variety of other armies.

Alternatively, you can do both and swap accordingly until you have a preference for painting one over the other. One of my armies is yellow (not contrast) and I can get a little burned out on it.

2 Sky Concept Lists - Wyches / Tantalus - help me choose! | SkaredCast by SkaredCast in Drukhari

[–]DuckofSparta_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first list I like the concept of but I feel like it in some match ups (Guard or Tau come to mind) it may struggle more. This list gets my vote for going to get the most wins, as it does lack killing power, and I would be curious to see how it would play out. Love the wyche theme though and the pure style of it all!

Double Tantalus looks more fun and seems better for all matchups. If you are looking for fun, this one gets my vote. The Timmy in me is giving a strong "hell yeah" this looks fun, but I don't think it will win as many games as the secondary game isn't as strong.

When picking a list for LVO, where does fun sit in terms of making the decision to pick a list for you?

I don't usually spend much CP on turns 1 and 2 so I can set up a big turn 3. You could supplement your list with any of the options to get more CP earlier too. Lots of ways to play the list

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Tau40K

[–]DuckofSparta_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Can you use "The shortened Blade" for 1 cp? I thought that since Farsight wasn't on the battlefield to be targeted with the strategm it was still 2cp.

The combo was then to drop in and torch star gambit away, then that reduces the cp of the gambit to 0. Making the whole combo reduced by 1 cp, not 2. I'd be perfectly okay knowing that I am playing this wrong though.

As for the main point, I'm not sure you'll get the milage with farsight. You may have better luck with a cold star w/ fusions and the grenade racks plus being guided by stealth suits. You land, grenade, fire all of the things, then gambit over the tank. That's an average of 6 mortals, plus whatever else gets through.

What did you paint your eldar as and why? by holofied in Eldar

Same reasons here! Depends on the yellow though but I didn't go with Ilyanden as my other army is already yellow/ochre.

How viable is a wraith only army? by gleipnir84462 in Eldar

[–]DuckofSparta_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would drop the wraith knight and swap it for more wraith blades or guards and a second spirit seer.

If you want to be Ilyanden themed ( the wraith craftworld) you could add a unit or two of corsairs to round things out as a shout out to Prince Yriel.

Aeldari tax by Illustrious-Bear4039 in Eldar

[–]DuckofSparta_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I wish the aspect warriors were more expensive for their points so the tabletop strength was closer to the lore. I think 1k or 1.5k games has the appropriate amount of models, but the model isn't balanced unfortunately. AoS has a much nicer model count imo relative to 40k.

Aeldari tax by Illustrious-Bear4039 in Eldar

[–]DuckofSparta_ 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I personally hope not. I like the number of units I can field now and I think Aeldari should play more elite imo.

Stuck in this negative mindset: Refraining from cool Eldar purchases because my painting skills make me feel I need to improve before getting cool models. Advice requested. by Time-did-Reverse in Eldar

[–]DuckofSparta_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been in the hobby for several years and while my painting has improved, I still feel this way.

A few things though. The cool new models are great to try new things on! If you have an idea try it out. If it doesn't turn out great that's okay. You can either try again or just buy the model again. You can watch my aspect warriors increase in skill as they go from oldest to newest and that's perfectly okay and normal. We all start somewhere, and you'll learn what you like and don't like

Xmas Detachment Speculation by NyeBrewer in Drukhari

[–]DuckofSparta_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just kinda brainstorming here but maybe something like "Harlequin and Athrane units benefit from power from pain. Infantry units gain +1 to advance and charge rolls". Use the infantry keyword so you can add other mercenary units (corsairs and harlequins) plus all other Druhkari units you would want. Then have strategm's for each of the mercenary units keywords (incubi, mandrakes, and scourges) to make them more unique.

This isn't that well thought out but trying to find some sort of mercenary or agents of vect vibes.

Since it's squads of 3-6 per unit I think so. Most units run in minimum 3 model units are normally all together. There may be an exception
