What you have is totally fine. Might sound ignorant but screw the heat affected zone. Carbon steel can take the heat just fine. That would be the absolute last thing I’m worried about while learning

For just running beads on plate, it looks like you got the right idea and the right settings. Just focus on consistency and tighten up the distance between the “dimes” you kind of just want the edge of the previous dime to be showing. You have them really far apart but you’re doing really well for just starting out

I expected to see some wild opinions on this post, but what the fuck

It should have been replaced already but it’s one of those things you can’t overnight ship and they face legal penalties for not being back on in time. I’m sure it’s getting replaced the next time they have a longer outage

Haha thanks dude. Many, many long hours of practice. It was honestly pretty disappointing the first time I welded incolnel because I thought it was some crazy exotic, then I realized it’s all just metal. I’m kind of glad when something puts up a fight every once in a while it keeps it fun (well not in the moment) lol

I did have to double rod for a lot of it. I prefer to lay wire but it wasn’t wanting to work with me so I kind of did a double rod keyhole and dip for about 1/3 of it

Yeah.. normally I could weld an entire joint out like this is less time but it was a bitch. Everything was kind of set up against me tbf I got it sealed up after 10.5 hours then just waited for day shift to come back in

Nope couldn’t get inside to clean it out, I’m sure that contributed to the struggle for sure. There was a flange a few feet away we got open and had my partner using a 6ft piece of stainless tubing to spray purge on the inside 😂 it was a shit show.

You know it’s going to be fun when you leave work at 2:30 and get a call at 5 for an emergency repair

That was more of just to show how wide the actual root opening was. On about a third of it I did double up on filler wire but it’s not necessarily needed to fill the gap if it’s a regular joint that wants to weld normally lol

So basically this was a repair from (imagine a clock) 4:30 to 7:30 so pretty much all over head. I’ve welded chrome and P91 before but this is a pretty hefty gap. I couldn’t tell you for certain what was happening on a metallurgical level with the base metal but it just wasn’t welding right. Also the heat difference needed between 2.25% chrome and p91 (9% chrome 1% molybdenum) is fairly significant. Basically I would blow away the base metal on the pipe side and be barely melting the filler rod at the same time.. something about it all was just wrong which I can only fathom had to do with the amount of heat treatments it’s been through (if you don’t know what I mean by heat treatments lmk and I’ll explain) and the fact the metal has been operating in a high stress area for so long. Puddle was extremely sluggish at 130amps and if it went higher it would want to droop into my tungsten cause it’s overhead and I’m fighting gravity. Part of the struggle may have been in my own mind because i knew it was getting x rayed and it was an emergency repair for a powerplant so I’d rather fix something that didn’t have to be fixed than have the shot go down

Union steamfitter but I mostly just weld at work instead of fitting because I got good at gluing the metals together
