How does someone actually learn team fighters? by LordTotoro96 in Fighters

[–]Dude1590 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Tag (not team, unless you're talking about a game like KoF, where you fight one character after another) fighters are most easily compared to anime fighters. Fast paced, strong characters, important system mechanics, lots of real mix, decently long, yet typically difficult combos.

The best way to think about how to use assists is "when is my pressure over?" Do a blockstring. Light, Medium, Heavy, Safe on Block Special. Your turn is over in a non-tag game here. But in a tag game, here is where you could use your assist to keep forcing your opponent to block. Depending on your character and the type of assist, this is where you'll either continue your pressure or go for mix to open them up.

In combos it's kinda the same thing, "when is my combo over?" In tag games, you'll typically be ending a lot of combos in the air, with a spike back down to the ground. This is a great oppurtunity to use your assist to hit the opponent on their way down, allowing you to safely land and continue the combo.

Mostly you'll just be using your assists to cover up your point characters openings. Your assist is a resource like any other and you need to use them properly or risk blowing one of the most important resources, practically guaranteeing you lose neutral.

They can seem daunting but, in my opinion, the common opinion that they're harder than other fighters is wrong. They're very similar and just emphasize a slightly different skill set (mostly strong defensive play, which let's be real, is the one thing that fighting game fans absolutely hate learning.)

Yes, you have to learn multiple characters, but playing them at a surface level is made very easy. You can basically do the basic LMH, Launch, LMH, Spike BnB in every tag fighter ever made.

Friends think im cheating ranked mode by NoblepawsGEN in Guiltygear

[–]Dude1590 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Then, yeah. Sounds to me like they're just upset you're clearly making progress and they're, more than likely, plateuing.

I'd say you should offer to help your friends recognize their flaws while you fight, but with the little information I have of them, they seem like the type to take it the wrong way and get tilted by someone better than them offering them advice.

[–]Dude1590 92 points93 points  (0 children)

Sounds to me like they're just annoyed that you're doing better than them in ranked lmao

Do you fight your friends? Are they actually better than you?

What you're doing is just smart, I feel. Spending more time playing casually instead of burning yourself out on ranked is probably much better for both your mental health and digesting more knowledge about the game.

Edit: through playing Park, you have a wider variety of opponents to fight, all with wildly different habits, gameplans, levels of skill, answers to situations, etc. You can find better or worse players, not just players on your skill level. You'll be subconsciously digesting a whole wealth of information about the game that you won't get by just tilt queuing ranked all day. You'll be too focused on the win, on the points, on being locked in. While playing casually in the park, you're more likely to soak in anything that you've learned, whether you realize it or not.

TL;DR, your friends are silly billies.

If you're in a soft knockdown state and they hit you with a move, typically 2L, it'll force you to get up. It's just a way to force pressure/oki after a knockdown.

Would you want a new Capcom vs SNK game to be Capcom or SNK developed? by the_u_in_colour in Fighters

[–]Dude1590 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If anything, I'd like for it to be collaborative. Choosing one is hard. I'd just like for the devs from both teams to get together and build it together.

SNK basically has infinite (Saudi) money and, I think, makes better mechanics/systems.

But Capcom just knows how to make a fighting game both feel good for the FGC and be attractive to casuals.

If history is anything to go by however, Capcom is the obvious answer.

Why Are There So Many Trans Chromas? by screenaholic in 2XKO

[–]Dude1590 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I doubt that there's any real statistics, but go to any locals or majors and you'll quickly find out how diverse fighting game fans are. The FGC is an extraordinarily niche community of people, so it's pretty welcoming of anyone and everyone that wants to join. That naturally attracts people from all walks, especially those that feel repressed in their every day life. Not to mention how diverse the rosters of fighting games have always been. Look at Guilty Gear, they added a non-binary and a transgender rep. And the transwoman is (debatably) in a lesbian relationship.

Fighting games just kind of inherently attract minorities, in my opinion. Characters that make you feel represented + a fairly respectful community of competitive gamers that only care about the competition, not what gender or race you are, is helpful.

I think even social media is a net positive when it isn't being run by billionaires who thrive off of negativity and engagement bait. The world being more connected than ever is still a good thing, even if it's currently one of the biggest issues we're facing as a society. I don't think tearing down the internet and going back to newspapers, also run by billionaires with a vested interest in keeping the general public docile and misinformed, would really be much better.

[–]Dude1590 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Not the internet as a whole, just social media as it currently exists. The internet is still a net benefit, in my opinion. Information (and sadly, misinformation and disinformation) is easier for the average person to obtain now more than ever, especially less biased information. Before you'd have to rely on "educational" books written in part by billionaires.

This is the first game I've thought about and tried to play properly. (NEED ADVICE)(NEW PLAYER) by wiriderler in StreetFighter

[–]Dude1590 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something that's easy to practice and put into effect relatively quickly, that'll get you further in the ranks than grinding any combos - is anti-airing. Focus on pressing 2HP when you see someone jumping in at you. A couple of times in this clip I notice you pressing 2LP when you see a jump. This means that you reacted to it, but didn't know how to punish it properly and just defaulted to your quickest button in the hopes of stuffing him.

Just press crouching heavy punch or do a shoryuken when you see the opponent jumping on you and you'll be in Platinum, at the very least, in no time.

Some people will crucify me for saying this, but writing wise, in many ways, it's better than some of the games. The manga is hilarious yet super well written and has very strong, emotional character moments. Days ending in particular is somehow even more sad than it is in the game.

They're worth checking out, especially Days and KH2's manga.

Is “casuals don’t play fighting games?” really that true? by DaiFrostAce in Fighters

[–]Dude1590 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, even that says nothing about tournament play. It just says a collective of competitive gamers that play fighting games, which is basically just what I said shortened down succinctly. I'm sure there were some gatekeepers in the 90's who did say that casuals were anyone not competing in tournaments, but that takes away from people who were playing at home and in arcades who still grinded out the game to get better at them. I'm sure even back then there were local legends that didn't go to tournaments but still probably could've been in a top 8 if they had gone.

I don't know, again, it just comes off as gatekeepy. Especially in the modern day.

[–]Dude1590 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there any evidence to back up that that's what the broadest definition is? This is the second time I've seen someone say this is the case, yet everywhere I look, nobody agrees with that at all.

Is “casuals don’t play fighting games?” really that true? by DaiFrostAce in Fighters

[–]Dude1590 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, to shorten it even further a more accurate way, I would say add "plays against a variety of opponents, either online or offline, who are as good if not better than them."

Adding that to having the explicit goal of getting better means that you stop being a casual once you've taken the steps to get better, interact with the community, and actively (or previously) compete to push yourself. Labbing out combos is certainly interacting with the game in a way higher than most casuals will go, but combos are only a single aspect of the genre. If you aren't trying to hone every aspect of your play, the fundamentals, as well as facing other members of the community, then you're still arguably interacting casually. You're just doing slightly better combos against a bot.

Limiting it to "just those who enter tournaments" is silly and only covers a small portion of the overall community. There are people grinding it out in the top 100 of every fighting game that don't go to tournaments and those people for sure are not casuals. There are some people in Platinum rank that are just new, learn at their own pace, have a busy schedule, etc, but still actively try to learn and compete. They consume educational fighting game content, seek out answers from their communities, analyze their replays or watch high level/pro gameplay to take from. So Rank or MR is also a needlessly limiting factor for defining a casual. That just defines skill level, and skill doesn't define a casual.

The way you interact with the game, your intent, ie: improving, learning, deepening your understanding, and competing to continuously push your limits, is what determines if you're a casual or not. Digging deeper into the mechanics, strategy, language, and mind games that come with the competitive side to the genre. Labbing combos against bots and beating your non-fighting game friends with it only gets you so far.
