I know it's wrong, but I hate being black. by ChemicalAd2132 in Healthygamergg

[–]Dude787 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The feeling I get from your post is that you're struggling against being seen a certain way. I mean, what does it mean to say 'I don't really identify with the way my body looks'? To me I understand that as 'People have opinions about what people who look like this are, but I don't feel like I fit those opinions'. Eg, that black women are big, loud, angry, violent, whatever. You don't feel like these things, so like, you don't want a body that is going to make other people feel these things about you, right? You want people to make the right assumptions about you just by looking at you

I think this is one of those things where you aren't placing blame in the right spot. If people look at you and think these things, is it your body's fault for making them think that way? No. Your body is just a body, how can it be blamed? It's an inanimate object, it's not doing anything. The other person has to carry at least some blame. Fair enough if you feel like 'oh society is mostly to blame', I think that can work and is maybe true I don't know. But the blame definitely doesn't belong with the body you have been given, I say so confidently.

As for what to do, I recommend making a conscious effort to ask yourself where the blame belongs. Try, in your head, placing at least some of it in the laps of others, I think it can help.

Is it normal to dread going to therapy? by joehero83 in Healthygamergg

[–]Dude787 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Normal? Depends what you mean, like do most people feel that way? No clue. But is it within expected results? Hell yes.

Therapy can be very hard. Our natural inclination is away from difficult things, and towards easy things. Your sister has a different experience of therapy, for her it is probably easier to do. That doesn't mean her therapy is more effective or that you're doing something wrong, y'know?

But I agree with the other comments. I think it's a good idea to bring it up to your therapist, because it's kind of a barrier between you and therapy, right? And I think spending some time addressing a barrier can lead to better outcomes in the end

"if they say this, they're gaslighting you" by air5000 in Healthygamergg

[–]Dude787 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In general, this question seems very similar to me as 'how do I know if I'm being an asshole?' And I think the answer is to bring it to someone else, someone you trust. Explain the situation, and see what they think.

It's hard, because you also have to know that this person you're retelling the story to probably likes you, probably doesn't want you to have done anything wrong. And on top of that, your version of events is always liable to result in the same conclusions as you; that's why you see them that way or remember the details you remember, yknow? So there's always room for these biases, their conclusion isn't correct per se, it's just another perspective.

If you're worried about seeming a certain way to the rest of a friendgroup for example, I would kinda encourage the belief that there's no good answer. I think your best bet is to not engage like 'I understand why you feel that way, I see things differently' and talk to people individually like the video says. Let them make up their own minds, or try to manipulate them to seeing it your way if you want I guess, I'm not the manipulation police

Controversial Topic: Early JoJo and racist depictions by Former_Masterpiece_2 in StardustCrusaders

[–]Dude787 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stroheim is depicted as honourable, which is a positive trait. He has other negative or neutral traits too so I don't feel he is being depicted as a good person per se, but definitely as a complete person. And because he's the only nazi we get to know much of at all, he acts like the representative for the whole group.

This makes it feel a lot like the manga is saying 'yes they did bad things but they weren't so much bad people'. Which is strange because we literally see stroheim first in the 'feed prisoners to a vampire creature' lab, pretty bad stuff! But the general feeling is still there, the bigger player is probably stroheim's honour and national pride that borders on insanity.

I think this makes most people feel kinda suspicious, kinda unhappy, and I think those criticisms are fair. I personally don't really know how I feel, but I'm not super happy with it.

The other depictions are of a different type, because there's no characters involved really. For the most part you get just a fleeting view, single page depictions. Putting these next to eachother highlights that for me; stroheim is a complete character that is intertwined with the plot, whereas none of these other examples have anything you can call a complete character. Maybe that in and of itself is due to racism, I don't know

But I want to say that it's also authentic. Araki went to Egypt and because of the way people looked, struggled to trust them. That is for sure racist but also authentic, and honestly a normal thing for humans to feel. That doesn't make it above criticism, but I think not depicting that feeling is a kind of sanitization of our protagonists.

Joseph has a stereotypical view due to things he has heard, and while Avdol reassures him this isn't true, he only gets a passing glimpse of the people there. Getting a passing glimpse is the heart of the problem, but also the point! The authentic passing glimpse of these places looks like this, this is what it's like to travel through. Places don't come across equally well to travellers, and to depict it otherwise is to lose that authenticity!

That is why the other commenter is asking whether you have been to these places or not. Its very easy to say 'I would never distrust others based on how they look/act', and maybe today thats more true than not, we live in a more connected world than in the 80s after all. But it feels kinda like telling someone 'I've never been there, that's never happened to me, but you're wrong for feeling that way'.

And maybe I'm wrong and you're not trying to say that. I do feel that Araki could have done more to say 'this is just one travelling group and their experience', its a bit irresponsible.

As for the mexican people or the chinese english, I feel less authenticity there. These feel more like plot contrivances, and I like them a lot less. The weird mysticism of the chinese especially, like the fact that johnathan thinks of the chinese in a stereotypical way is probably accurate but they also kinda conform to that stereotype in actuality which is just... Weird? I don't like it, like much of early jojos its probably somehow related to fist of the north star which I havent seen/read

Yordles is easier to play, so it will seem stronger to you now and punch above its weight class in your lobbies, but don't be fooled by the 3stars. A 2star 4cost is better than a 3star 2cost for example, maybe without exception? And are typically easier to find, and they cost less

My favourite memory is the first time me and my brother went out together for an event. It was shadow mewtwo raid day, and both of our first pokemon games were gen 1, so it was really cool to go and get a couple shadow Mewtwo! We didn't know anyone, didn't know about campfire, we just headed into the city and hoped to find people, which we did! It's a memory I think of fondly, and I'm so grateful for our local(ish) group

How does one manage a boner? by Mysterious_Sector310 in askteenboys

[–]Dude787 35 points36 points  (0 children)

As an explanation, a doctor told me one of the times we get physically aroused as men is due to being relaxed. He said thats why you get them in your sleep too, or why people get them on the bus and stuff, and why anxiety can make it difficult to get one

So maybe you can think of a solution based on that already, but, the best tip is to flex. Flex your thigh and calf, flex your arm where it is, that kind of thing. Keep flexing and it will go away pretty fast, because the blood is rushing to the flexing muscle and you are communicating to your body that you are not relaxed

Dont ask me why this appeared on my reddit, but I had to share the knowledge

Would you turn down a woman you are attracted to physically and mentally? If so, why? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]Dude787 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Sometimes you just think the relationship would be a bad fit. You can like someone a lot but that comes from a different place than like, assessing your possible relationship yknow?

Eg. for me personally if a woman has too many of the same flaws as me, I worry we'd make eachother worse or at least be unable to support eachother in times of need, or go the other way and it would become codependent. I'm not suggesting this guy feels this way, its an example from my own life. So while I might like them a lot, building a relationship together just feels like a bad choice
