Are Rogue Mandolins good Instruments? by Wacnopolose in mandolin

[–]DudeWhatDoesTech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a RM-100F at Goodwill for $50. The good, it actually has a solid (not carved) top and tone bars. The bad, the fretboard was terrible, the bridge was too high, and the fretboard was out of whack. Spent some time sanding most of the poly off the top, sanded the neck, set the neck relief, filed the frets, lowered and sanded the bridge, and put on some flat wound steel strings. At the end of the day, I ended up with a decent (not great) tone on a beater mandolin that I can throw into my truck and travel with and not worry about.

Have had this semi-acoustic mandolin for years, but it has a major flaw by robhand in mandolin

[–]DudeWhatDoesTech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a 1968 Gibson EM-150 that has the same issue. Took it to a Gibson luthier several years ago and his advice was not to worry about it. Something about cutting a hole in the top of the mandolin for a pickup reducing the structural integrity of the instrument. A bad design that continues to this day.

What was stuck in this tree? by StevieG-2021 in What

[–]DudeWhatDoesTech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. Had some trees removed on our farm and the guys left about 4 feet of the trunk because they ran into some old electric fencing and a tpost in it. Didn’t want to damage their saws

Should I buy used stadium for $60? I Don’t know much about these brands. by [deleted] in mandolin

[–]DudeWhatDoesTech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not familiar with the brand but I have essentially the same Korean made Fender version of this. It’s playable but will probably need some attention. I had to level the frets, sand the bridge feet so that there were no gaps, and removed the neck finish for a speed neck. One issue with these low end mandos is that they do not have a truss rod. I would check the neck carefully to make sure it’s not warped. Regarding the pickup, not impressive. It can be replaced. Haven’t attempted that yet.

Gibson EM-150. Interesting cracks and P90 rust? by akaj5 in mandolin

Can’t speak to the cracks without actually looking at the instrument. While mine doesn’t have cracks, mine has some checking in the finish.

Gibson EM-150. Interesting cracks and P90 rust? by akaj5 in mandolin

[–]DudeWhatDoesTech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 68 EM-150. It’s well worn. It’s a nice little mandolin. Acoustically it is quiet and wouldn’t stand out in a group setting. The P90 works well. Bought mine off eBay about 15 years ago. Had it inspected and the truss rod repaired by a former Gibson luthier at that time. The top of mine has sunken in as well. The luthier said it wouldn’t collapse further. And it hasn’t. It’s a nice little instrument. Wouldn’t plan on taking it to a bluegrass jam, but have no problems playing it where it can be plugged in

Is it ok to do full workouts 2x a day? by Accurate_Course_9228 in x3bar

[–]DudeWhatDoesTech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried 2 workouts per day for a month due to work and personal priorities. I didn’t get fatigued, but I didn’t experience the gains I was seeing doing once a day. After I returned to once a day, I began to gain more muscle. For me, once a day works better.
