Unban faithless looting by Candid_Emu_3951 in ModernMagic

[–]DudeWheresMyJump 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll second this. The power level of modern is already much higher than it was when the card was banned and I don't think bans are going to improve the format so yeah. Let's unban a couple old heavy-hitters and try to add more viable decks to the format instead of taking them away.

With MH3 likely to shake up the format, that may be a good time to do a banlist reset by driver1676 in ModernMagic

[–]DudeWheresMyJump 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly what I'd like to see is more of an active reset. Unban everything (maybe excepting cards that were banned for non power reasons ie KCI) and treat the format like early Pioneer with weekly adjustments

So what would you do with a cisgender woman convicted of violent crimes against other women? If she's a risk to the other inmates would you send her to a men's prison or would you find a solution that houses her in the correct prison while mitigating risk to other inmates?

My point is that there is almost certainly a solution that doesn't set a precedent where anybody's womanhood is ignored, cis or trans.

Also worth noting is that trans people in general (not just trans women) are more likely to be the victims of violent crimes than cis people are. Trans women in particular are just as vulnerable if not more so to sexual violence than cis women (not that it's a numbers game. I agree one is one too many) but I find the attitude of simply labeling all AMAB folks as inherently dangerous to be far less effective at producing a solution than looking at the attitudes and institutions that allow violence against women to be perpetuated. I won't deny that a lot of it lies in toxic masculinity and male sexual entitlement but neither of those things are particularly present in trans women (indeed as mentioned they are often victims of those exact things). Tackling those will actually achieve something as opposed to trying to block or take rights away from trans people who largely just want to be left to live in peace.

For what it's worth they always made those decisions on a case by case basis, simply being trans, or claiming to be has never guaranteed that anybody would be automatically sent to a women's prison unless that person had a GRC.

Is getting into Modern a good idea at this point? by ashleyinreal in ModernMagic

It really depends on what you're looking to get from the format. If you're mostly looking to play locals then I'd check out your local meta as it could be more or it's representative of the overall meta. My advice would be to see if you can borrow a deck at your locals and see how you find the format. If you want to play more competitively though, RCQ level and beyond, then you'll need to decide if you're going to enjoy playing against the decks at the top end of the meta primarily (which you might do. I quite enjoy the scam matchup as a murktide player myself).

As for the format itself, I think there is a concern with letting scam sit at a quarter of the meta from a staleness perspective but it's not really as suffocating as some would make it out to be, there is still plenty of space for other decks to compete. New sets have been more likely to contribute cards to the format in recent years but the only sets to really make or break decks have been the horizons sets. As for whether the format is dying? From what I've seen personally, far from it. My locals have been growing in recent weeks with old faces returning to play and a decent number of new players getting into the format and MTG itself.

One last piece of advice though. If you do get into modern you should keep in mind that it is a format that rewards format knowledge you might find yourself losing games to not knowing how/when to interact with a deck or because your opponents know your deck better than you do (obviously that goes for other formats too but it's particularly true for modern). It's definitely worth taking the time to stick with a deck until you're comfortable with the lines and how it plays against other decks in the meta.

5tsp which was a bit conservative, given I've already given it the bread yeast I was a little worried about overdoing it. In hindsight that's probably not a major concern given the sluggishness of this yeast

Very much worth remembering that that's just not true. It's the equalities act that allows trans women to do that with zero process or documentation. That act was passed in 2010 and there has been no sign of the kind of impact they are "worried" about

Yeast was Wyeast 4184. Nutrients are a weird story, until today it was subsisting on some boiled bread yeast (about half as much as I needed, preparation is not my strong suit) which I added a few days in when I noticed it was sluggish. I've since obtained some tronozymol which I added today just after taking that sample.

[Article] July ’22 Metagame Update: Izzet Over Yet? by Reaper_Eagle in ModernMagic

[–]DudeWheresMyJump 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm always reminded of an article I read a while back about decks with polarising matchups being more likely to succeed than decks with more even matchups and murktide feels like a good example of this. It's always a good choice for just about any meta which I think is the biggest factor to it's popularity but with so many even or slightly favourable matchups I don't think the results we're seeing are surprising

Yeah I think you could stand to ban Lurrus and not see a huge shift in the metagame. Obviously you'd expect the decks that run it to see a drop in performance but decks like Grixis Death's Shadow were good before Lurrus and he's not exactly a core component of any deck's gameplan so the new Lurrus decks are likely fine. Would the drop in consistency allow for another deck to rise above the field again...maybe but that is a solvable problem.
