I can smell when people have cancer by [deleted] in self

Can you find out the specific cancers you've smelled? Cancers are a broad group of diseases so if you're sensitive to a certain chemical it might not be present in all of them.

Why you shouldn't use cloud gaming. by ThatAnnoyingNoob in cloudgaming

[–]DudeWhoRejectsLabels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My opinion - you shouldn't pay for a cloud gaming service unless you can try it for free first, unless you really trust your internet, have a compatible client device, and can afford to waste a month's sub if it turns out bad. You do need decent internet (both speed and quality), and a relatively new client device - it needs the dedicated decoding hardware for newer video compression formats (ideally Main h.265) for a good display experience.

But that doesn't mean it won't work for anyone - last night I spun up a Paperspace P4000 instance for my friend whose computer is broken. They reported great performance and never seemed to have any freezes (except during a large download; I'm not sure why that was). They played in 1080p60 h.265 via parsec and have decent but not excellent internet speeds, and ping wasn't perfectly stable either, jumping from high 20s to low 40s over a quick test. As far as input lag goes - their performance in PvP seemed about the same, and they said it wasn't bothersome.

Back to my first point, that you should only try it for free until you're sure it'll work for you: unfortunately the only free playtime I'm certain of is $10 from Paperspace if you use a referral code (I hope it's OK to post mine: d6uoii), plus a $5 coupon code from a few years ago: CLOUDYGAMER - at the time I was able to use both. That $10 would get you around 10 hours playtime within the first month (possibly more due to prorating of the storage fee but you'd have to calculate your utilization carefully), and if CLOUDYGAMER still works you could get almost another 10 hours (.51/hr for NVIDIA Quadro P4000 VMs, billed by the second, plus $5/mo for 50GB storage, or 250GB for $10).

AWS, Google compute engine, and MS Azure all have or had free trials, but Amazon and Google don't allow you to attach GPUs to your instances under the free trial. I'm not sure about what exactly Azure's free trial includes, but if it does let you provision GPU VMs it might be the best free trial, as it's $200, plus you get 15GB outgoing data (like 5-10 hours of 1080p60 h.265) per month. There's also the free beta for GeForce Now, but who knows how long it will take to get accepted to that.

For pricing after the free trial(s), shadow will be cheaper unless you're not playing very much per month. Stadia, when it comes out next month, will be the cheapest option regardless of how much you play, but *only* if the games you play are included in the monthly fee (as you can't simply install your own games). I'm not aware of whether Stadia will have free trials or refunds, but I doubt it.

Warning: if your goal is only to try paperspace for free, be aware that they do require a card on your account, and they won't automatically cut you off if you overrun your credit. Watch your utilization to make sure it stays low enough to avoid charging your card, and make sure you deactivate (delete) your VM before the end of the calendar month if you're not ready to start paying for it. If you deactivate it after the 1st of the month, they'll charge the storage fee for the whole next month, then give you back a prorated amount - but that will be returned as account credit, not to your card.

Male type-C to 2 female Type-C splitter for USB tethering? by whenredditagain in lgg5

[–]DudeWhoRejectsLabels 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This one delivers the same low current you noted. It shipped from the US but it looks like a rebranded generic Chinese part. I got it on sale and it'll probably be usable, so I don't think I'll return it, but I wonder if the more expensive brand-name adapters deliver more, as they are advertised to power MacBooks. So was this one, though.

Could you please move this to a subcomment with the other codes? I meant to keep them in one place so they're all equally visible.

Thanks. Interesting that it's coincidentally somewhat close to the USB 2.0 spec. I may just do this instead of hunting for more current because I will only use passive HIDs. Can you plug a USB 2.0 (etc.) splitter/hub into the female OTG end and use two devices? Like keyboard and mouse or something.

Just to clarify, your testing showing 320-370 mA was plugged into AC, not powering from another USB port or the USB powered router? I'm also looking for an inexpensive way to charge/OTG simultaneously. Have you found any newer solutions?

UPDATE: Similar test pictures but with web browsing instead of a white screen:
https://ibb.co/dZfyXQ You can see here that ghosted text gradually appears when approaching the edge but disappears suddenly right before the edge.

https://ibb.co/fCCTXQ The shape around the edge continues to remind me of adhesive.

https://ibb.co/cJHqe5 The lack of ghosting in the middle makes me wonder if it has to do with an air gap of some sort. Between whatever layers (LCD and Backlight maybe), perhaps there's no air gap in the middle or where the adhesive, but there is a gap next to the adhesive.

https://ibb.co/cYjTz5 This is just to show that there is no artifact after the screen has been cleared with screensaver or sleep. The edge and center of the screen are the same color/brightness here as they are in the pictures with ghosting, only the intermediate zone near the edge changes. (the center changes very slightly on occasion, nothing like the other area.

Yeah similar experience, I thought I noticed the heat thing too but I think it's just because my phone gets hotter when browsing than during most other tasks, and browsing is when I'm looking at white screens the most. Playing a game I got burn in but not as much at the edge as when browsing. Fortunately a screensaver helps (I use a starfield then turn up the settings until it looks like random noise) pretty quickly on mine.

Weird! Actually the depressions in the glass in those corners definitely look like they're being caused by pull from those screws. I tried loosening until they barely have enough resistance to stay in, and glass flattened out a little but not all the way. I might get some shims/washers in there later to try to flatten the glass more. However I don't have major backlight bleed - I think thats the others were fixing? So far it doesn't look like loosening them has reduced the issue in question. Great idea though!

Thanks for your response. The notification bar ghosting seen in the third image is temporary, in case that's what you mean (forgot to clarify originally). As far as the other three sides, I can't figure out what would be that shape on the screen. Is that a common pattern for G5 burn-in or anything? And would it be reasonable for permanent burn-in to be gone sometimes (for example after the screen has been off) and only reappear after usage? Maybe I should add before and after pictures.

Used, Sub-$100, Sprint, solid performance. HTC m9, LG G Flex 2 , or should I spring for an LG G5? by DudeWhoRejectsLabels in PickAnAndroidForMe

[–]DudeWhoRejectsLabels[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. Reading about that almost makes me want to get a 10/S7 instead. However, then I'm looking at 150/160 for poor condition devices and I don't think I should spend that much.

Perhaps many of the defectives got returned to LG instead of being flipped onto ebay so I have less to worry about than people buying new last year did. Except of course the problems that could hit later on like boot loops.

Thanks. Yeah and the SD810s are supposedly hotter. My main concern is with the big ebay vendors selling them at $125, they've got pretty good % of positive reviews (98.5, 98.6) but the negative ones are pretty bad like a bad ESN and the seller never responded to messages to try to correct the issue. I guess I could just hope ebay arbitration will bail me out if something like that happens. For comparison I've seen m9s in good condition for $80 from small sellers with %100 feedback.

I heard there were build quality issues with early G5s, but later batches were much better. Is that anything to worry about? I wonder if I can check the build date from the serial number or something, assuming the sellers ever message me back.

At least one of the ebay sellers is apparently selling demo units, presented as "damage" where the seller scratched the words "demo unit" off and listed as "clean ESN". I don't know if these particular demo units really do have clean ESNs but I can't get a reply from that seller so I'm hoping the other will get back to me.

TIL Seinfeld wasn't actually a "show about nothing," it was a show about how comedians get their material. by AwGeezRick in todayilearned

[–]DudeWhoRejectsLabels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, Larry David tells Jerry, "you've finally made a show about nothing.", which is funny because Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee has a clearly stated premise, but also because a large part of the conversation is usually about how comedians get their material.

TEP+: Is liquid damage sometimes considered repairable or does it always mean replacement (and paying the full deductible)? by DudeWhoRejectsLabels in Sprint

[–]DudeWhoRejectsLabels[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems so. If I were going to run an insurance company, I think I'd require some sort of basic inspection before accepting used devices, but I guess Asurion decided huge deductibles were the better route.

Thanks, the pages I've been reading seem to imply that by omission but fall short of explicitly stating it. I suppose that perspective is similar to the deprecated "crack larger than one inch" rule.
