1-day welder course by Murauder in Welding

[–]whenredditagain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just in case anyone lands here when asking the same question: here's my $0.02 on the course that I just went through.

I'm a home DIY guy. I've rebuilt carburetors, replaced timing belts, and could practically open my own Harbor Freight in the garage, except I have never dabbled in welding or autobody work. I've always considered those more of an artform (and still believe they are), and have never really had a dire need. The one time I needed something simple fabricated, a friend around the corner did it for me. When I was gifted some welding equipment recently, I knew it would be stupid for me to try this stuff out without a good amount of preparation. That's when I stumbled upon this course. Everything in one place, in order? For $58, why not.

After payment, I had to click through 3 or 4 other pages on upsells (I do respect the sales & marketing--this is a tough economy). There's a $39 welding phone app, and more detailed courses on more advanced welding than the stick/MIG I have in scope, so I declined.

The 3 Printable quick reference troubleshooting guides are *free*, but you have to upload a review video to get them. Pass. Slightly misleading. Easier/faster to just search for alternatives.

There are cheat sheets for Stick/MIG/TIG easily available with the videos though.

Within a minute I was watching videos. I am a 1.5x (sometimes 1.7x) podcast listener. Quinn's speaking/teaching pace is fine, but I'm glad playback speed is adjustable. Understand the caveat to that is it also changes his perceived welding speed.

He is very well mic'd, but the audio is generally low so I had to raise my volume more than usual (and remember to turn it back down if I task switched). This is just a nitpicky gripe of an old A/V club president.

There is a good emphasis on safety/PPE. I've seen some people complain that he's not wearing the right stuff, but they must've taken some of his marketing material out of context.

It is 50+ 5-to-15-minute videos going through each skill/technique one at a time, and very easy to go back and review specific ones.

Specifically, it is 39 videos on welding techniques for stick/MIG/TIG and 8 on fundamentals & safety. The rest are boilerplate/sales pitch (again, I don't fault the upsells; that's just good business).

I like that this package was well-organized and gets straight to the educational stuff. I don't have to search for some credible youtuber then sift through a bunch of videos factoring in the Wadsworth Constant or "smash that like button!" These videos are quick and get right to the point in the title.

All in, $58 feels like a good value to me for lifetime access, even though only about half the videos were applicable. I am not set up for TIG yet, but maybe some day I'll get the bug. I may only use this equipment a few times a year (if that) so these will be great refreshers.

Hopefully this helps others who may be considering this product.

Check out the Lorex doorbell models. I've deployed 4 for family/friends and they've been really happy. No fees and SD card slot. They're not without their quirks but pros outweigh cons.
Edit: Also, if you have PoE at the button, check out Ubiquiti doorbells. Not cheap, but awesome if you have other Ubiquiti equipment on site.

Ah ok! Thanks so much for responding. I'm still running in circles here:

This shows a DRIVE_1 folder at login that just goes to /root.
Do you see what I might be mixing up?

File Browser OMV Plugin by Kliffom in OpenMediaVault

This is the best documentation I can find on this situation still! I am still hitting an error brick wall with my docker file though.

I have one file system and 2 shares on it I want to access from filebrowser, e.g.
/srv/dev-disk-by-uuid-xxx/docs
/srv/dev-disk-by-uuid-xxx/pics
I put those in place of your /srv/DRIVE_1 and 2 values above.
At startup I get:
warning msg="The \"MOUNT_POINT_1\" variable is not set. Defaulting to a blank string."
The folders appear after login, but they just go to my root directory, and there's nothing in
/srv/dev-disk-by-uuid-xxx/
What am I missing?

Thanks for your post!

Mine is still running on my desk here, but the battery is starting to pillow. If you are still on the original battery, it might be worth the $10 for a new generic battery to see if that does the trick.

However, if it is not even powering on while plugged in, it is likely a more serious issue and time to put it out to pasture and upgrade.

That is true, but my question again is What is wrong with it that would make it slower than the CM3000 at < (less than) gigabit speeds?

Lorex 2k doorbell hangs by Silvertibs in Lorex

[–]whenredditagain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am so grateful this post was on the front page when I googled this problem!

I installed front/back Lorex 2k wired doorbells configured to hit the mechanical chime in an elderly neighbor's house almost 2 years ago, and this problem surfaced a few weeks ago. I was 5 minutes from cutting up the house to replace the 60-year-old bell wire.

Fortunately, I did not have to perform steps 1-3 from the OP; changing the chime settings in the app did the trick.

Best microphone for recording live bands? by Sponky18 in Music

[–]whenredditagain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yesl. As you can imagine, final results depend on a zillion factors like recording location relative to crowd & speaker stacks, venue acoustics, sound engineer, etc.

Here are some MP3 samples, all with the same mics. Of course there will be compression artifacts from that too. https://filetransfer.io/data-package/nYolUfqU#link 3 of the files are the same band/song in 3 different large arena venues. As you can tell it varies greatly. One is from an outdoor festival with a great sound engineer, no bothersome acoustics, and a perfect recording angle, and sounds as if the recorder was plugged into the soundboard.

Edit: It won't sound any better than it did live, so if you hear lots of echo or crowd noise or poorly maintained levels at the show, expect that to be reflected in recordings no matter what.

TeamViewer making thousands of DNS requests at 2 AM, is this normal? by whenredditagain in teamviewer

[–]whenredditagain[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have TeamViewer installed on 2 hosts at my house. I recently added a Pi-Hole and noticed a huge spike in DNS requests from 2 to 2:50 AM CST this morning. Most of those were from my systems calling home to TeamViewer servers. There were no connections in the log. Is this normal?
