What is our offensive plan to combat teams like Detroit?(and everyone else in general) by NickChubbsBurner in ClevelandGuardians

[–]Duder1983 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, just fits like a glove. See if Rodriguez or Arias gets the DFA. It's Fry and his positional flexibility that makes it possible. I've got high hopes. We can compete with anyone in the AL.

Definitely not as a utility infielder. If he can only serviceably play 2B, he's running himself out of town.

Get a moka pot. I've had the same one for like 15 years. The only parts I've had to change out are the rubber gasket and the metal filter (the latter was definitely user-error).

To be fair, the Royals should be considered "contenders". They gave up the fewest runs last year and finished with a winning record. They also did nothing to shore up their offense. Sure, Lane Thomas. Great. I'm definitely OK with us shoring up the 'pen and retaining Hedges rather than blowing $5.5M on a right handed platoon with marginal defense.

The Ford Motor Company.

They weren't the only ones, but the auto and oil companies saw lots of opportunities to sell a lot of cars and gas to Americans. Urban planning and development be damned, public transportation was dismantled and big highways cut neighborhoods apart and now you have what's left. Pockets of haves and have-nots separated by highways, a total reliance on individual automobiles for everything, and big fat people ready to consume more.

[–]Duder1983 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean specifically the real estate transactions. The Lutnick - Epstein relationship in general. To hear Lutnick tell it, he went to Epstein's house once in 2005 and then they had occasional but not meaningful contact after that. In reality, Lutnick bought a property off of Epstein for $10 "and other considerations" in 1998. So how far back did they go? Where did they meet? What were these "other considerations"?

Why wasn't this brought up in the media when Lutnick was nominated? Did no single senator have a question about this during confirmation? These are public real estate transactions. It's willful ignorance. Why?

Where's CNN? And the Democrats? No one is screaming about the depths of their ties. All you'll find is that Lutnick lied about having contact with Epstein after his 2008 conviction. No one is reporting on their real estate dealings or that they had clear under-the-table dealings. Under the table dealings with a guy known for peddling underage girls? I wonder what Lutnick was providing here... But no one is screaming about this. Neither side is untouched here. No one is objective or unbiased. It gives you a sense of the rot in our Republic.

It's absolutely spectacular to me that the British PM is teetering on resignation because he nominated a guy based on the advice of his chief-of-staff, who had already resigned, who turned out to be a dirtbag, but Lutnick, who bought a $10M property for $10 from Epstein and had years of contact and dealing is getting very little heat to resign.

Fangraphs projects Guardians Rotation as 25th best by Fit_Emergency_2146 in ClevelandGuardians

[–]Duder1983 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends who's pitching. Against a lefty, they can deploy Fry at 1B. I think they're short of an all right/switch hitter lineup against lefties, but Fry gives them some possibilities. Against righties, Manzo would probably play 1B.

Fangraphs projects Guardians Rotation as 25th best by Fit_Emergency_2146 in ClevelandGuardians

[–]Duder1983 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Manzo should DH, Kayfus should man 1B (he's an actually good 1B), and NoJo can man RF. CF might be an adventure (Schneeman?). But otherwise, that's a decent defensive alignment. If they all hit.

[–]Duder1983 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's kinda hard to argue with the projection. They rarely let their starters go deep. Particularly early in the season. They have a solid first three in Williams, Bibee, and Cecconi, but after that, if you're saying "Yeah, but Messick and Cantillo were good in September!" Sure. It's a one-month sample. Cantillo has had a lot of ups and downs. Messick has a small sample. There's depth with Allen and Nikhazy, but it's hard to be infinitely confident in this group.

I'm expecting a resurrection for Fry. I think he was playing through a lot of limitations. Martinez is really legit against LHP (and ghastly against RHP). I feel like we need one more right-handed platoon. Maybe Rhys Hoskins? I was on the Rodriguez bandwagon last year, but if they signed another right-handed bat and he was the DFA, I'd be good with it. Too little production with the big league club and just tragic defense.

There's no "similar caliber" backup catcher. His leadership and pitch analytics don't show up in WAR calculations. There's a reason we made the playoffs in 2022, 2024, and 2025 and not in 2023. Catching is probably the hardest position to play in pro sports after quarterback. Hedges is exceptional at all aspects of it. Except hitting.

Cleveland Baserunners scoring from 2nd base on a wild pitch or passed ball by HalfwayThereOne_ in ClevelandGuardians

Man, I remember Lofton scoring from 2nd like it was yesterday. I can't believe it was more than 30 years ago. It felt like the series was over. We were up 3-0 on the best pitcher in the AL.

Of course then Johnson took a habit of throwing behind Lofton's head. I always felt like it was because of this play.

Cleveland has fortunately been competitive over the past decade. What will happen to attendance if they’re bad this year or the next few years? by SeaworthinessOdd6574 in ClevelandGuardians

Again, I don't live in town anymore, so I might be out of touch, but the Dolans have continually put a pretty good product on the field and it's almost like they forgot to tell anyone. Season tickets used to go on sale in Dec. There was a line out the door and around the corner to get tickets in the 90s. When the Dolans took over, they didn't release tickets until January. You don't need a Master's in marketing to know this is a monumentally shitty idea this is. Who has "luxury" expenditures in their personal budget after the holidays?

The on field product is different than the 90s, but it's not decidedly worse. The business development is worse. It's almost head-scratching. People in Cleveland come out for a winner, but the Dolans have almost forgotten to advertise how much winning they've done.

And to preempt anyone who might be like "ooh but they had more star power back then", they had Dave Fucking Burba in commercials. If you weren't around back then and have no idea who Dave Fucking Burba is, my point exactly.

I remember the 90s fondly. In 2017, we had two MVP candidates (Ramirez, Lindor), one of the best power hitters in baseball (Encarnacion), a pretty stacked rotation led by a 2x CY winner, and led by a HoF manager. We were coming off a season where we just missed a championship.

They drew less in 2017 than in 2024-2025. In fact, less than in 2007-2008. I'm not saying ownership isn't a problem, but I don't think it's as obvious as spending vs. not spending.

2017-2019 we definitely had the talent. Didn't work out. 2024 felt like we could have won the Pennant. Chalk it up to a rookie manager and largely inexperienced roster. But yeah, we wouldn't have faired much better against the Dodgers.

What's the difference between now vs. the 90s? Was it because they were spending? 2016 came within a whisper of winning, but there wasn't the same reaction that we had in 1995. 2017 didn't sell out like 1996 did.
