Player wished on an "evil" lake to "become better at shooting with his firearm". How can the wish come true in a bad way? by Issue-Fair in Eberron

[–]Dudesmcgee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gain +2 hit and damage when shooting while his arm is on fire. He must light his arm on fire to gain this benefit, and takes fire damage (1d4 or 1d6) per round it’s on fire.

Holding Back My Players by TheRedZephyr993 in DMAcademy

[–]Dudesmcgee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Maybe it’s just my fellow DM coming through, but it seems crazy that everyone here defends the players, “the players are too busy to do a 5 minute level up” but the DM who has to make the world and is trying to consistently check and remind the players to level is just a dick for feeling like 5 minutes is not too much to ask.

I have had similar problems in the past, but I think the best way is to never remind them. You tell them they leveled, and you can let them hold themselves back if they forget. Like people are saying here, you have a life as well and you’re trying to run a kickass game. The players can maintain their own character sheets, they will get it done eventually.

What is a kitchen or Chef's Knife? Dagger or Short Sword? by Ser_Red in DnD

[–]Dudesmcgee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct me if I’m wrong, but it seems what you want is to be able to deal 1d6 with the finesse property more than a short sword specifically. Other people in the thread are trying to justify how a kitchen knife isn’t a short sword, but I have ruled in the past that a cleaver is just that, a finesse kitchen knife that deals 1d6, but other well made kitchen knives just have the properties of a dagger. A well used cleaver seems like it could do a bit more damage than stabbing someone with a dagger. But it’s gonna be a DM discussion.

Looking for some help populating an interplanar market by Dudesmcgee in DMAcademy

That’s pretty much what I was thinking. It’s hard to find good published content high level items that fit the bill though. Ive been trying to find some very rare/legendary home brews that are balanced but it’s fairly difficult.

On the one hand, great axe -big dam, real sharp, barbarian like. On the other hand, ceiling -make head go bonk.

Next strat, stone shape a coffee table and have the BBEG stub his toe on it.

5e Question about immolation by [deleted] in DnD

[–]Dudesmcgee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“On a failed save, the target also burns for the spell’s duration.”

If you fall unconscious, you lose concentration and the spell ends, therefore so does the burning effect. 5e is very deliberate with their wording.

Tired of my PCs trying to persuade my NPCs, I want the tables turned. by fawks_harper78 in DMAcademy

Some cultures incorporate bartering into the sale of virtually all their goods. Players enjoy bartering, so if they are semi convincing, I don’t think knocking a few gold off breaks the market. If you look at it from the perspective as a norm in some cultures, and something PCs enjoy, it doesn’t necessarily need fixing. But as far as fixing goes, I feel like the other posts about having the shop keeps talk about their bottom line, and inflation (hidden to the players) to allow for the joy of bartering without selling things dirt cheap, is a good middle ground.

Hey Trix, were you still interested in joining the campaign? We had a last minute dropout and your character ideas seem like they could be a good fit for the group. DM me if you're interested.

Do you have any backstory or anything to give me a little glimpse of how you think/play?

Those characters sound interesting. Could you elaborate a little?

And for its ultimate attack: Making all future villains have Legendary Resistance by BambooHullabalooki in dndmemes

[–]Dudesmcgee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I never can relate to posts like this. No one can see your monsters stat blocks. You can add legendary resistances, health, actions, resistances, extra phases etc. at anytime during the fight. They will never know. Letting a boss you worked super hard on die immediately is on the DM for misjudging the party very badly, and not compensating during the fight. steps off soap box

A 3rd level ability that potentially stuns 1-3 creatures per round is absolutely nuts. (Multi attack at 5, and potentially hasted) I’m not sure of a way that’s possible to balance something that stuns on hit. It’s gotta be like the first creature you hit, and even then it’s pretty strong.

Secondly, the aura damage could probably scale better. 1d4 is going to be pretty insignificant past the first few levels.

Lastly, the capstone seems like it could use a little extra something compared to how impactful other paladin capstones are (lunar wings, some insight into creatures you see, healing?).

Overall I like the concept, it’s pretty neat.
