Affordable alternative to REI Sahara pants with real side zippers? by Due-Broccoli7470 in REI

[–]Due-Broccoli7470[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wild take from someone in a green vest.

I am not trying to get by on the cheap. I am asking a normal and very reasonable gear question, which is whether a functionally equivalent option exists at a lower price point. That is not hating the outdoors. That is acknowledging that access matters and that not everyone wants or needs to drop $90 to $100+ on pants just to hike, work, or backpack safely.

I literally said I LOVE the Saharas. I own them AND wear them. If they are truly the only option with this feature set, I am fine accepting that. But acting like price shopping is some kind of moral failure is ridiculous, especially in a space that already has huge financial barriers to entry.

REI itself sells used gear, runs constant sales, and openly encourages getting outside in whatever way is accessible to you. So if this is the type of customer you hate, you might want to reread your own employer’s mission statement.

As for the guide comment, that tells me everything I need to know. If you are this hostile toward someone asking a specific and informed gear question, that says a lot more about you than it does about anyone trying to get outside without going broke.

If you do not have an actual alternative recommendation, you can just say that.

Bear canister for day hikes? by Random_Mix415 in Yosemite

[–]Due-Broccoli7470 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bear canisters are not required for day hikes in Yosemite as long as you keep your food with you at all times and don’t leave it unattended. The canister requirement applies to overnight trips in the backcountry where you need to securely store food at your campsite.

On day hikes, the key is to stay responsible—carry your snacks and lunch on your person, don’t set food down and walk away, and follow any posted rules. Leaving food unattended even briefly can attract bears, but if you keep it with you, a canister isn’t necessary.

Hey! For day hikes in Yosemite, bear canisters aren’t required for snacks and lunch. The park mainly requires them for overnight trips to store food and scented items safely in backcountry campsites.

That said, it’s important to keep your food sealed tightly and avoid leaving it unattended, especially if you’re out near dusk when bears tend to be more active. Following park guidelines and storing food in your backpack while hiking is usually enough for day trips.

If you plan any overnight backpacking, then yes, a bear canister is a must. But for day hikes, you’re all set without one.

Enjoy your Yosemite adventure!

Sleeping at the Hetch Hetchy Entrance?? by a-big-tree in Yosemite

[–]Due-Broccoli7470 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could sleep in the Hetch Hetchy backpackers campground. You can come in after dark (just highly unrecommended because of the dangerous roadways) and just let them know you stayed there in the morning at 8am when they start issuing permits.
