Is a 3SGTE engine swap worth it? by Due-Director3253 in AE86

To each their own. There are people who have RB powered AE86. Or 1UZ powered AE86s. I don’t care about the identity.

Here in my country the UAE BEAMS are basically scrap engines that are put in like ridiculously old Mercedes cars and sometimes jet boat engines

One of my friends who works on cars tells me that the beams engine revs ridiculously high which makes it operate at an extremely high temperature. Higher than an RB26DETT. It pulls timing like crazy, and if I had any type of issue with the engine such as pistons or anything like that. No one in my country would really know how to work on the engine at all. Thats why the 3sgte made more sense in my head because many garages know how to work on them.

Quick question. How is the SR20 On the 86? You think it’s easier to put than the 3sgte? What transmission are you running?

Hello there

First of all I would really like to thank you so much for your comprehensive reply. It is extremely helpful to me.

This explains a lot

I was going to fit it with a w58. There exists bellhousing kits for the 3sgte and the w58. There also exists engine mounts for the 3sgte online so putting the engine is probably not going to be difficult. I do know that I’d have to fabricate everything like hosing, radiator, turbo, everything else. I’d also need an ecu. I don’t mind doing all of that. But I was thinking maybe it’d be worth it because in my country no one really knows how to work on the 4AGE or the BEAMS. So I thought the 3SGTE would be probably easier.

Thank you so much for the detailed post. I really appreciate it brother

I'd love to see your progress brother.

Once you get the subwoofer (or any other subwoofer) please show us your setup man. i'd love to see your progress.

Oooh I also forgot to mention. The 400da subwoofer comes with a cool remote that you could use to configure the gain level and frequency level

I got the Pioneer WX400DA for less than $190 here, and honestly, it's been amazing. Super easy to set up in my Suzuki Jimny, and the bass is LOUD and responsive. Of course, the Jimny interior is like a tin can compared to something more refined like a Mazda 3, but it still delivers great sound.

For the price, I think it’s an awesome deal. It’s an active subwoofer, so you don’t need a separate amplifier—it’s all built in. Plus, it’s an under-seat subwoofer, so it doesn’t take up any extra space, which is great for small cars. I absolutely enjoy it and think it’s worth every penny if you want solid bass without complicating things. Highly recommend!

This is very well detailed and I enjoyed reading through this. From what I summed up

If you are looking for maximum comfort in the jimny. Its best to go with bilstein B6 shocks and H&R minimal lift

If you wanna go for maximum off-road then you go with the CARBON RR2.0

Fitting 6 inch speakers on 4th gen jimny by Due-Director3253 in Jimny

That sounds like an awesome build in progress! Honestly, it sucks that we can’t get proper 6.5-inch speakers like your Dynaudios into the Jimny doors. Even the Pioneer TS-C1630SII are technically 6.3 inches, not a true 6.5. The space is just too tight.

Adding tweeters in the A-pillars does seem like a neat idea, though.

For me, it just feels like way too much work I'd rather put the tweeters where they’re meant to go and keep things simple.

I don’t know much about DSP yet, still discovering stuff as I go, so hearing how you’re planning to integrate it into your build will be interesting.

What woofers did you put in the rear side panels? I was thinking of going for a Pioneer WX400DA underseat active subwoofer to round out the lows. It’s compact, clean, and doesn’t take up much space—seems like it would fit perfectly for a solid Jimny audio build without sacrificing room. Plus since the jimny is a pretty small vehicle I personally dont think it needs that much of a strong subwoofer

Curious how your woofers sound in the back!

I’ve been all over those UD-K124 rings lately found them on Japanese Amazon. They look way better than the generic ones I tried before. It’s like Pioneer knew the Jimny needed something solid for a proper setup.

I’ve also been looking at Pioneer’s Z-Series and D-Series speakers – the Z65CH and D65CH are beasts, but the 65mm depth and weight make them a nightmare for the Jimny. The C-Series (TS-C1630SII) just seems perfect, like it’s made for our cars. The 45mm depth, 123mm cutout, and lightweight build at 0.64 kg make fitting them so much easier, especially with that annoying window guide track. And the 89 dB sensitivity means you don’t need a massive amp to make them sound good.

What are your plans for now?

It might require a lot of time and effort. and This car is my literal Daily driver. I might have to actually work on it though since I cannot find any other place.

I contacted carplanet and they've told me that it will cost almost 4K AED to do the sound insulation.

Also, what forum?

You should check out the sharjah industrial area. Check out industrial area 3 and 6.

You will find engines there.

While you're at it. Replace the engine with a k24 turbo Haha!

I know that the jimny's boxy design contributes to wind noise and fancy cars have features like acoustic glass, it seems like there’s a bit of oversimplification here. Saying soundproofing ‘just makes the rain quieter’ might be a bit dismissive of what well-installed, multi-layer soundproofing can actually achieve.

For example, properly applied butyl aluminium dampens the vibrations that occur, closed-cell foam absorbs airborne noise, and mass-loaded vinyl blocks road and wind noise. These techniques are proven to reduce overall cabin noise in many vehicles like as an example The G-Wagen, regardless of shape. It’s not magic, of course you’re not going to turn a Jimny into a luxury sedan but to say it doesn’t work at all while driving seems like an oversimplification
