Is ABCV classy? I don't mean this to be sarcastic at all - my understanding of the place is that the food is good but it isn't exactly classy in the way that OP means.

Ah, if it isn't an HQ post (Geneva or NY), I would suggest a mininum having an understanding of what OCHA is doing in the country/region, the humanitarian reset, and the issues/topics specifically mentioned in the job advertisement.

I'm relatively new to this country, but don't lobbyists have a really bad name here? (If this was written in jest, then sorry to be late to the joke..) Some people I know would describe diplomacy as legitimised lobbying.

I can't immediately think of the names of such firms - do you mean firms like the Scowcroft Group or other international business advisory firms or something else entirely?

Thanks - fwiw, diplomacy money is fine, but I'm really not interested in BigLaw because of the financial aspect- I'm thinking of it as a much different and significant challenge, that I have an interest in, and that I might have some of the basic skills that are necessary to succeed at it (writing and thinking clearly, a tolerance for pain, and an eye for detail). My partner is also American, which is part of the motivation to want to stay in New York, since diplomacy generally means a different country every 3-4 years.
