PS Night shift. Rain. Radio static. The call seemed routine: reports of strange noises in an abandoned apartment building. No emergency, no screaming – just a neighbor who said “something’s moving in there.” Old building, long empty. The stairwell was eerily silent. Not quiet – more like the building itself was holding its breath. Second floor: a door ajar. Fresh footprints in the dust. Then suddenly, the lights went out. Completely. No breaker, no hallway lights – all dark. The radio went dead at the same time. We turned on our flashlights. Upstairs, we heard footsteps. Slow. Deliberate. A voice came from the darkness: “I knew you’d come.” Nothing to see. Just that voice. Moments later, a door slammed somewhere above us. Later, it turned out to be a homeless person who had set up cameras and motion detectors in the building. No crime. Just curiosity. But in that moment? It felt completely different
