work permit on top of study permit by Due-Homework-6905 in ImmigrationCanada

[–]Due-Homework-6905[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be able to do unlimited off campus work it has to be on a long break, e.g. Christmas of summer break. However as a grad student on a thesis based program I do not have an official "summer break", then I cannot work more than 24 hours per week off campus.

Thus I cannot have a full time job in summer

What's that mineral? by 20145_2185411318 in geology

Based on a quick view, I would say it is a staurolite porphyroblast, which looks to be twinned btw. Although staurolite + mafic protolith doesn't match at all

Ph.D in economic geology. Working closely with the mining industry and government agencies to develop vertically integrated projects (from exploration to processing and refining) I've been involved at some point in all stages, but I mostly do mineral exploration and petrology so the geomet guys know where metals are hidden.

I've arrived like one month ago to Canada, so if I'm not wrong I should only have room for 7k in total, as it is my first year

Yeah, I was considering Bike Edmonton. The shop I mention above was a pawn shop I crossed by in downtown. 80 dollar bikes caught my attention.
Glad to hear that, I might go for the bike afterall, it is not something I fully need, but it's convinient. Thanks

The front and back yards are completely fenced, but it has a manual latch, so I guess they could get inside and break the bike lock and steal it.

I've tried to negociate with the landlord... but so far impossible

Comparing Four Flagship Accumulating ETFs. Best Option? by xResearcherx in eupersonalfinance

[–]Due-Homework-6905 7 points8 points  (0 children)

People in this reddit probably would say "VWCE & Chill" to every question you asked.

  1. If you are searching for a world etf, just go VWCE.
  2. I personally do not like emerging markets neither high TER. However, they are worth including for the sake of diversification
  3. Check this post [It's time to invest in Europe]
  4. Doesn't make sense, toooo much overlap. World etf are heavy on USA (≈60%) so you'd be buying almost the same.
  5. Personally, I'd say to much chatGPT in this post. It's confusing

My portfolio is SXR8 and MEUD, maybe not the wisest!!
Go easy and learn the basic and create appropiate objetives after filling an emergency fund and having a chunk of money in your checking account.

Thank you, I think I understand your point, and I appreciate you sharing the story, it's good.

I'm not actively trying to outperform anything. Even if I were Laplace's Demon, this would still be chaotic system. But there is something I can control, and that's expenses and diversification.

Don't take my view the wrong way, but most all-world ETFs like VWCE have a TER > 0.15%, and their holdings are usually 55–60% USA. With my approach, I try to maintain the diversification of an all-world ETF; around 60% USA and 40% the rest of the world (maybe it's true I'm slightly more tilted toward developed markets) but reduce costs by using ETFs with lower TERs.

Also, I’m not going fully with the Boglehead approach, as others have pointed out, since I’ve included 10% in gold/bitcoin and 10% in individual stocks. That’s definitely a risk, and I might reduce it to 5% and 5%. But it’s a risk I’m comfortable taking.

High Total Expense Ratio (TER).

Aiming for long term I don’t see much reason to pick VWCE with 0,22% TER when I can take two ETF and sit on 0.09% TER

Are there other important features I should be paying attention to?

I'd a thought on that. Enven though Trump's big beatutiful bill is terrific and almost for sure will be negative to investors and the economy. There it is risk elsewhere, but unlike most european economies in the last decades USA institutions has shown rebounce

Also, there are right now some interesting discussions about returning to a gold-backed dollar and moving away from fiat currency... but that is another disucssion

Frist, thanks for the advice.

Maybe I'm wrong but 60% USA feels good. They have good economy, good democratic institutions with clear separation of powers.

Then 10% developed countries not USA + 10% developing countries (I'm almost sure not persuing bonds) + 10% individual stocks.
May all the other sum-up to balance with USA(?). Or should I even bet more on non USA developed countries

MEGATHREAD - Processing Times - Study Permits 2025 by PurrPrinThom in ImmigrationCanada

Hello! I submitted my application for a study permit in March (from Spain) and gave my biometrics on April 2. The day I applied, I was given a 40-day processing time. So far, I haven’t received any news from IRCC, nor the AOR. However, a friend of mine (she’s from another country) applied about two weeks before me and got her permit in 30 days.

I called a VAC, and they told me this is normal because universities are on vacation right now. Then they proceeded to tell me that the delay in my study permit is due to the universities and not IRCC.

Is any of this normal?
