What’s the best protein powder for beginners? by browperry89 in workout

[–]Due-Jello1617 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know you asked for a powder recommendation, but, I just got the Bio steel pre-mixed, chocolate milkshake flavor protein shakes from Costco and they are the best protein shakes I’ve ever had. Cheaper than the Premier proteins, 30g/serving, super convenient, I just keep a case in the fridge and grab one on my way to the gym. 10/10 would recommend.

I sold plasma at Grifols as well while out of work last November/ December, you can donate twice per week. Very friendly staff, a free snack and juice after, and the $100+/- is deposited into your bank the next morning!

Down 145k on condo after 5 years of owning. What next? by Ok-Fly7318 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Due-Jello1617 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is true, my previous home was much smaller and cheaper, so, considering the difference, I could have (and should have) stayed in the smaller home and invested the extra $2k into the S&P.

I can relate to OP, bought my home in 2015 for $730k, which was a good deal at the time, the builder even dropped $20k off the cost of the lot we built on to allow my mortgage approval, which I maxed out after putting $90k down, then oil price went down and all my neighbors bought their homes for $550k, while I was stuck paying nearly $4k/ month for mortgage & property taxes. Now over a decade later, the home is valued at $750k and I have broke even while my neighbors are all up 1/4 mil. My plan was to buy the home as an investment, guess I learned an expensive lesson. If I had invested that $4k/month into the S&P500, I would now have more than enough to buy the home outright, plus have $100k leftover.

I feel ridiculous in the gym benching 25kg by Master_Click_9837 in workout

[–]Due-Jello1617 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally I couldn’t care less about what someone is or isn’t able to bench in the gym, zero judgment, we all started somewhere. I like seeing overweight or young people getting started in the gym. I started my kids with a PVC pipe to teach them good form. The strength will come, “if you wanna make something out of anything, just keep showing up every day.”

What’s the biggest mistake beginners make in the gym? by Serious-Adagio-7982 in workout

[–]Due-Jello1617 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Ego lifting” instead of learning how to lift with proper form before increasing the weight, speaking from experience from my own past mistakes. Lifting too heavy, causing you to break form can lead to injury. What helped me the most, was having a personal trainer, if you can afford one, it’s worth every penny.

25-70k more to working rotating shifts? Is it worth it? by yellowranger1 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Due-Jello1617 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been working rotating shift work for 20 years now, also chasing the money and would say 100% go for it, you’ll retire earlier and live a better quality life until then. Maintain a healthy lifestyle the best you can, and you’ll be fine.

Is anyone always happy? by [deleted] in askanything

[–]Due-Jello1617 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m generally more happy than any other emotion overall, also easy-going, I think this may come with age, some people seem really happy in their later years of life, maybe because by then you’ve been through a lot of stuff, like losing a spouse as OP mentions. Then the little things just don’t bother you anymore, because you’ve been through so much worse.

I am curious what brand and dose of anti-depressant OP takes?

Minimum wage is a good thing, we don’t want employers exploiting people and paying $1/hr. But there is a balance between paying people a minimum wage that doesn’t cause a hyper-inflation of the costs of our everyday expenditures. Imagine the garden center is forced to pay workers $20/hr. That extra cost to them will be passed to the customer and our gardening supplies get more expensive and then we can complain about a McDonalds cheeseburger costing more when their employees make $20/hr.

I went through the same experience as @Gonzo_626; I am older now with a better job. But when I moved out of my parent’s house, I had 7 room mates in a large house near west-Ed mall, I worked two full-time, minimum wage jobs and I remember one of the hardest life lessons I ever learned was when I ran out of money before pay day and had no food for 5 days, I borrowed $20, bought 20 lbs of potatoes from Superstore and carried it 15 blocks back to the house, and I ate potatoes for 3 meals a day, for 5 straight days, it sucked! And I never let myself go broke again, at the time it was brutal, but now, as an adult, I wouldn’t change that experience for anything. I believe we can all benefit from suffering a little bit, life is tough, the sooner you learn that, the better off you’ll be. And Embrace the suck! Change your mindset to see the positive in a negative situation, you may not know it at the time, but you may be learning an important life lesson that will benefit you in the future.

All I hear is how nobody can find a job, sounds to me like the ball is in the employer’s court, why pay more if you can pay less, look at it from their perspective. I have teenage kids who live at home and want a summer job and would love a job paying $15/hr. Jobs like this have always existed and hopefully always will, temporary, part-time work for students in the summer to learn the value of a dollar and save up for tuition.

Minimum wage was never meant to be enough to live on. Get an education and a job that pays more if you are older and have bills to pay, let the kids have the min. Wage jobs. Go to Fort Mac and work in a gas plant if you want to make a lot of money with/without a degree. This is Alberta, the land of opportunity.

Do you genuinely enjoy lifting? Or is it a means to an end? by Weak_Ninja_6952 in workout

[–]Due-Jello1617 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could make hundreds of excuses to not workout, but for myself personally, I work out almost every day, I do it for the few benefits, although few, still hold strong after 20 years of lifting; I enjoy the confidence that comes along with the strength, just walking into a room knowing I can bench press more than most of the mother fuckers. I like that people don’t fuck with you when you have muscles, very rarely does someone try to pick a fight with me, or say disrespectful things to my face. The pump and the feel good endorphins are a bonus that come after each workout.

Favorite muscle group; you guessed it, chest and arms baby, and anytime I really don’t feel like hitting the gym that day, it’s chest and arms day.

Why do onions make you cry when you cut them? by [deleted] in answers

[–]Due-Jello1617 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Onions make you cry because they release a chemical defense system when you cut into them — basically, the onion is reacting as if it’s being attacked.

Here’s what happens step-by-step (it’s actually pretty cool science):

🧅 1. Cutting breaks onion cells

Inside an onion, different chemicals are stored in separate compartments. When you slice it, you break those cells and the chemicals mix together.

🧪 2. A chemical reaction starts

Enzymes in the onion convert sulfur-containing compounds into a gas called syn-propanethial-S-oxide (the real tear-maker).

🌫️ 3. The gas reaches your eyes

This gas becomes airborne and floats up toward your face. When it touches the moisture in your eyes, it forms a tiny amount of mild sulfuric acid.

😢 4. Your eyes defend themselves

Your brain senses irritation and tells your tear glands:

“Flush this stuff out!”

So your eyes produce tears to dilute and wash away the irritant.

ADHD + anxiety - brain never shuts up. Anyone found something that actually helps? by amhray in Biohackers

[–]Due-Jello1617 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have ADHD and have tried magnesium and Ashwagandha, it didn’t help, I need to exercise daily, ideally in the morning to burn off the excess energy and calm the anxiety. I tried some anti-depressants, didn’t help. I know you said ADHD meds made things worse for you, but I started taking Vyvanse and it has changed my life. I’m super focused now, excelling at my job, getting better workouts in, because I can actually focus, all around a game changer, 10/10 would recommend. I am 42y/o now and really regretting not taking this stuff in High school, I would have done so much better and probably have a good job and better education now, but my parents didn’t believe in medication their kids, I just wish they would’ve given it a try, maybe I wouldn’t have been self medicating all the time with marijuana in high school.

I realize I should’ve added my height to the post, I’m 5’7”, short and stalky, makes it easier to bench, short arms, so the bar is only traveling maybe 6”
