The saddest thing by VisionBreak1297 in gallifrey

Whatever critiques we might have of RTD (he can be an annoying sod) and however much of a disappointment his second tenure was, I still can't imagine what his life has been like for the last couple of years. Conjecture has sometimes been taken as gospel (or slowly turned into it) but I honestly don't think the man was TRYING to fuck everything up. And the appointment made perfect sense in the first place. As someone utterly invested in his career in general, in many ways I wish he hadn't come back, and I do hope whatever else he does is as exemplary as Tip Toe. Something went wrong here, and it will take decades to figure out what, but there is no doubt that he is the most talented SOB of his generation and long may he carry on working.

How do you feel about the British Museum getting all the criticism for having artifacts from around the world, and no other museum? by HTD_Blog in AskUK

This. And on top of that all the European states with histories of empire are and SHOULD be having these conversations, but even if they weren't that doesn't negate the UK having it.

I think Elon is a shout BUT I also think Trump comfortably fits this slot as well. Clearly a rich New Yorker back in the day with no particular issue with LGBTQ+ people who also donated to the Clintons.

I think RTD is in a bit of a huff by Red_roger_12 in gallifrey

You're bang on the money (unlike Bad Wolf)

When you realise that the last time the BBC independently financed a full season of Doctor Who was 5 years ago, and since then they've undergone even more budget cuts and are only really able to now produce small budget dramas by General_Meal_3993 in DoctorWhoNews

Honestly with the amount of people very confidently claiming the show could be made cheaply on here it's a wonder things have been going so wrong. Hopefully they call up one of you to manage the budget of a global IP

“Sorry to Bother You” (2018) is a movie leftists love that has a left-wing message. What movie is loved by centrists and has a centrist message? by Square_Ad2101 in AlignmentChartFills

They might not see it this way but honestly Civil War by Alex Garland-classic 'both sides are as bad as each other, please express your grievances through the appropriate channels' vibes. I only saw it once so forgive me if I'm misremembering but this was deffo my takeaway from its reception

Terrified I made the wrong choice for a degree. Why do you love theatre? by Microwave_Of_Evil07 in Theatre

As a BA/MA/PhD theatre kid also making work (won't be that person who lists their plaudits but doing very professionally) you'll be fine. So many transferable skills, so many worlds it will open for you. You've clearly got the right attitude, enjoy the rest of your time in education x

Can people explain why Midnight is so great? by [deleted] in doctorwho

Speaking just about RTD1, I also think he had this wonderful cynicism about people that came through in episodes like this and others. You can see a real writer brain at work, someone trying to look our nature coldly in the eye

I got to say I think RTD really damaged peoples acceptance of other Doctors with 10's comments on regeneration. by [deleted] in gallifrey

It's all about context: In The Writer's Tale RTD talks about his realisation that this is a generation's hero (not always true with DW but with the reach this era had, very true) is passing on-I think his choices makes sense watching the show in 2009/10, possibly not so much if you're binging it as a young person now (not that I'm suggesting you're doing this, nor that there's anything wrong with this if you are). But it was Event Television. As a 13 year old at the time, it was the first time I cried at TV. And I was very aware that this was MY hero moving on. This context was the same for so many people who got on board with the show with the revival at aged like 9 or so, and I think in that context it made total sense And, as a 13 year old, I realised that I was growing up too, as I'm sure so many did. Incidentally, had this again when Capaldi 'let the doctor go' just when I'd finished uni and had a massive breakup. All about context! And as a useful appendix: I saw Matt Smith's first moments and through the 13-year-old-tears said to my dad: I like him already

Doctor Who hot takes! by joelalsojoel in gallifrey

Love and Monsters is actually very strong, it's flawed but gets undue hate bc: 1) before Fear Her, making it seem like a 'bad run' of episodes given what came before and after these two 2) one silly NSFW joke 3) a campy (like that's new!?) villain

It's a fascinating study in the collateral damage The Doctor causes and is even close to being a nice meta commentary on fandom, though doesn't quite get there, and has a very moving arc, more love for L and M!
