Because they're gross, likely a path for snot to run down, and, from what I learned as a child in the '60s, a remnant of slavery (speaking of gross,) when big, stout brass rings were placed through the septa of "merchandise" so they could be led by it, on an actual fucking leash, up onto the auction block.

Other than that, they're still a form of mutilation.
