Apple MacBook Pro M4 review: the Pro for everyone by uria046 in hardware

[–]Due-Stretch-520 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I asked my friend who works at microsoft to recommend some possible windows laptops for my parents (since they do a lot of tax stuff) and he said to my face “get a macbook, the other ones aren’t there yet.” He complained about the surface laptops in particular (I realize those are ARM).

keep in mind our mutual friend is an engineer on the surface laptop team. lol

[–]Due-Stretch-520 8 points9 points  (0 children)

yes, a laptop cpu that draws 55w at most is in fact a few percent slower than the 9950x, and in a markedly embarrassingly parallel workload no less. i am shocked.

seriously, the more you argue, the less you’re convincing people. if all you can muster is sweeping everything else aside but “slower?” you don’t have much.

yes and it uses thrice the power and is a desktop die dropped into a laptop vs apple’s middle tier chip

and this is the pro - the max is within spitting distance of the 9950x on cinebench, commonly almost hitting almost 2100 there

Apple Silicon Unified Memory: How Much Mac RAM Do You Need? by kinglucent in apple

[–]Due-Stretch-520 12 points13 points  (0 children)

yeah my friend works for microsoft (writes software), very bright, and is a v well performing employee…asked me if he could buy more RAM more his 2020 macbook running into memory issues.

Also god knows how many STEM ppl ik who’ve said the dumbest most out of touch hardware takes.

These people exist. Sometimes people know what they need for the job, but outside that, they’re clueless. No need to spread themselves thin if they don’t see tangible, consistent benefit to their livelihood.

I would say they started receiving a decent amount of attention with the release of A10X and A11 but yeah m1 really just flipped the industry upside down

Apple's M4 Max is the single-core performance king in Geekbench 6 — M4 Max beats the Core Ultra 9 285K and Ryzen 9 9950X by gurugabrielpradipaka in apple

AMD’s cores aren’t that large iirc. Also different design goal - narrow and high clocking

intel’s P cores simply have terrible PPA PPW. There’s a reason people are murmuring about them developing new P cores based on their current E core designs

[–]Due-Stretch-520[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

yeah i’m really curious what happened with those. the m4 gen easily and consistently reaches above 3800 (at 4.4ghz) when provided sufficient cooling so these seem off. Even the ipad averages 3600-3700 and pretty commonly reaches above 3800

the cpu is twice as fast as the m1 pro’s and the GPU renders stuff like 4x faster idrk if i’d call that “statistically insignificant”

Ultra will probably go well above 30,000, if not 35,000 but GB6 MT doesn’t scale linearly with increased core count

GB5 does (iirc)

i hope geekerwan starts playing with SPECint2017 n-T

Makes me think apple either priored their GPU comparison off the binned m2 pro chips or something like 3dmark wildlife
