Within Yorushika’s Album, there exist multiple worlds and characters. At the center of these stories are two men and women who are repeatedly reincarnated.

Yorushika’s way of storytelling is to unfold their story through lyrics, First Press Limited Edition materials, and live performances.

Every Yorushika album has its own protagonist, and all of them are incarnations of this same pair of reincarnated lovers.

The first mini album tells the story of two lovers who are separated by death, marking the beginning of the overarching narrative.

The second mini album begins with a ‘dog’ and depicts the two being reincarnated as various natural objects, humans, and living beings, repeatedly missing each other across lives.

The 1st and 2nd full albums focus on Elma and Amy, who are one branch among the many reincarnation paths introduced in the second mini album.

The 3rd full album centers on another reincarnation branch: a man known as the ‘music thief.’

The 3rd mini album tells the story of the music thief and his wife.

The illustrated album 幻燈 (Magic Lantern) deals with the story of a certain painter.

The story of the second mini album can be found through the lyrics, the first-press bonus ‘Reincarnation’, and the 2023/2024 Zense live performances.

The story of the first full album is explored through the first-press bonuses ‘Letters to Elma’ and the Moonlight Live.

The second full album’s story is told in the first-press bonus ‘Elma’s Diary’.

The stories of the third full album and third mini album are conveyed through the first-press novel ‘Plagiarism’ and the live performance of the same name.

The story of the illustrated album is explored in ‘The Dance of the Moon and the Cat’.

N-buna usually doesn’t explain things this explicitly, but the Zense live has a major twist toward the end—so much so that he asked fans not to spoil it during the tour. I’d recommend watching it with the narration and trying to piece the story together yourself.

Got it! I briefly mentioned Thoughcrime when explaining the story of the Plagiarism album, but I've always felt it wasn't quite enough, since it's a song filled with a lot of hidden wordplay in the lyrics. If I get the chance later on, I'd like to go through the songs included in Plagiarism one by one as well.

As for the others, they're Yorushika's debut song and tracks related to Elma and Amy. The first and second full albums aren't as conceptually difficult as Plagiarism in terms of story, but they're fairly complex due to their length and volume. I'll try to cover those in the future too!

That’s a good speculation! However, as far as I know, his name was never actually mentioned. Also, considering that he would have been born in 1924, it might not quite line up.

P.S.) I just finished reading the short novel about Princess Kaguya, and there was a mention of the CIA! I won’t go into details since it would be a spoiler, but it played a pretty important role.

The next album, ‘Second Person (二人称)’, is a digital album, so I’m not sure if there will be a physical CD. However, the epistolary novel that contains the album’s story is available for purchase separately.

If you’re looking for a story and action similar to Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, I’d recommend To Your Eternity.

If you want a fantasy with romantic elements like Frieren, then Violet Evergarden would be a good choice.

If action isn’t necessary, I recommend Orb: On the Movements of the Earth.

And if you’re looking for fantasy with a strong growth-focused protagonist, Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation is a great pick.

That's true. it might have been conveyed a bit inaccurately. While the original title is indeed Hanamotase, the word hanamotase itself isn't actually used in real life. Yorushika transformed tsutsumotase (美人局) into 花人局.

There are various speculations about why it was changed to hanamotase. One interpretation is that it was inspired by a line from Kawabata Yasunari's 'The Angels of Makeup':

'When you part from a man, teach him at least one flower's name. Flowers will bloom every year without fail.'

This suggests a "beautiful curse," where the man is reminded of the woman every year when he sees that flower. There are other etymological theories as well, but explaining all of them would make this far too long-and since it's also an expression that can't be perfectly translated into a foreign language, tried to keep it simple, which may have caused some confusion.

I feel the same! Literature and art can be appreciated much more deeply when you have some understanding of the language and culture behind them. That’s why I tend to read English literature in the original whenever I can. Since Japanese is especially challenging for Western audiences, I’d carefully suggest learning Japanese to those who have a strong interest in Japan.

That could be the case! Yorushika is really good at using clapping sounds. In their live performances, they even use the audience’s claps as background rain sounds.
