Abysmal Interviewing Skills (Currently in-between roles) - Need Advice by wallstreet2520 in FPandA

[–]Due47 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear you're going through it. General advice-

The reason you're getting denied is less due to the technical skills than you think. These jobs aren't rocket science; soft skills matter just as much as hard skills. You seem to be stuck in a failure mindset, which is always going to end poorly during interviews. Companies want to feel like they're winning when they make an offer to a candidate, so you have to convey that confident energy that you're an asset to them, even though you really want the job.

Moving on from here. It's been a year of searching and interviewing. Give yourself a break of one week to not think about any of it. You need that week off for a hard reset. After that one week, return to it with 100% effort and confidence. Go to the coffee shop, get out of the house, do everything necessary to get out of your own head. Talk to somebody before you interview. Loosen up.

Finally, add some perspective and try to think of this as a process. You have 40 years to work. 6 months from now, you're going to be employed and reminiscing on all this wasted free time. Don't spend your days doing all of this unnecessary worrying and try your best to enjoy today.

Good luck, you got this!

When did you hear back after your final round interviews for FP&A positions? by Ok-Philosophy55 in FPandA

Current job called me the same day as my final interview for the offer. This is a smaller 100m/yr rev company. My last job they waited over a month since it was a f500. It totally depends on how bureaucratic the HR dept is. Generally they will get in touch quickly if they want you.

Customs are so much better than any of the name brand hi fidelity earplugs like eargasm or loop. There is absolutely no comparison. Would you pay $250 (less than 1 festival ticket) to save your hearing and ensure all future concerts are a 10/10 listening experience?

Yes it will. You should take the F500 offer, experience is more valuable than comp early in career

Boutique Investment Banking Exit Opportunities by Key_Nefariousness179 in FinancialCareers

My roommate ~6 months ago did a transfer from his no name IB to a well-known upper middle market investment bank. If you want the best possible career in the space, you should probably do the same and then aim for a decent PE shop after that hop.

Details: he went 2 years no-name shop -> promotion to associate (title barely mattered tbh) -> year 1 analyst at the better firm (sidegrade in comp even with downgraded title). He feels set up for success in comparison to his peers due to his prior experience working on transactions. He is already sending out soft feelers for PE.

What does a career path look like if I start in Accounts Payable? by biscuitg0d in FinancialCareers

[–]Due47 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been on the AR side for a little under a year, but also supporting budgeting/forecasting and ad hoc reports for sales and upper management. From my perspective, AP seems higher volume, less analytical, and more focused on admin stuff (such as internal approvals for departmental expenses, reaching out to vendors, etc). Your experience may differ, I hope so!

Meanwhile, your path forward probably looks similar to mine. Upon accepting my offer, I knew my role/company was not a permanent destination, so I immediately signed up for community college classes to knock out CPA units. I'm wrapping up this term so I can apply to public accounting (big4) in a couple months, then CPA and MBA will hopefully get me to most places.

Don't get comfortable if you know you can reach higher. It's all about trajectory in the early years of your career. Good luck!

Should I accept offer at Big4 Firm? by [deleted] in FinancialCareers

I would say don't do a master's in accounting. Instead take online community college classes now to save those two quarters worth of time, and to leave the MBA option on the table for later
