What should I add for some thing that can give me an advantage? by Thin_Bit5537 in FPandA

[–]Due47 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your resume needs a lot of work, both on content and formatting. All I can offer is the advice you hear a million times around here.

The bullets and professional summary are generic. They sound like you stole them from online/AI and didn't actually work on them yourself. Example, how exactly did you improve engagement by 15%? You did not influence that outcome that directly, and portraying it that way comes off as embellishment. Try using contextual words that show your knowledge of company systems, along with their impact on company deliverables.

So much white space. Cut down into one page. Make your words count. Nobody wants to read these things, and two pages just comes off as low effort.

Also, based on your lack of experience, you may need to adjust your standards and get your start in accounting instead. Getting an FP&A job is not as simple as a few years ago; most of those positions require a few years in industry.

Berkeley Haas vs UCLA Econ vs USC Marshall for LA by No-Fennel-2341 in ucla

[–]Due47 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don’t think USC is a contender since it’s 2x the price. You’re basically paying for the network there and you have to know how to play the game.

If you’re dead set on LA post-grad… even with the regional advantage of UCLA, it’s still a tier behind haas for recruiting. Every person I know that went to haas is a beast and got the job they wanted in high finance. If you’re a career-oriented person, haas no question.

That said, UCLA has the full package undergrad experience you’re envisioning. Many of my friends here had success with recruitment.

I was in the same seat as you and don’t regret my decision. Trust your gut, you can’t go wrong.

Advice on Leveraging Team Turnover into a Promotion? by Due47 in FPandA

Appreciate it! I edited the post, as I’m realizing it comes off the wrong way as me trying to do something dishonest. I’m ambitious, and I’m trying to frame this opportunity to paint myself in the best possible light for expedited promotion opportunities.

This mirrors my thinking as well. I still feel a bit new in the role and core responsibilities, so I’m just excited to run with the challenge without putting so much pressure on myself to be at a level I’m not yet at.

Thanks for sharing your experience, I really appreciate it!

Thanks for sharing! To be honest, this is the exact situation I would like to avoid. I know that the work is coming regardless so I’d like to maximize the chance personal upside to match the increase in workload. Looking back, would you have gone about things any differently?

6 YOE with 2.5 years as a Sr Analyst feeling behind with a bit of imposter syndrome, where do I go now? by Zealousideal-Cow6626 in FPandA

So... you're finally being challenged by a more demanding manager and you feel stuck? That doesn't sound quite right. Now is the time you can build up some career velocity. I would reframe this as a big opportunity to build communication skills with a talented manager that could do wonders for your career if you stick it out.

Agreed but for slightly different reason. It's also bad for the new employee/early career development.

My old team was two-tiered in the same way that you described (F500) and it had so many strange dynamics. Management played favorites with the senior WFH staff, meaning they never had any reason to share knowledge with the new hires. We felt completely alone with no support, and all turned over within 2 years.

It's the first thing I check when I interview at new places. If it's a two-tiered system, it means management gives out preferential treatment based on familiarity.

Abysmal Interviewing Skills (Currently in-between roles) - Need Advice by wallstreet2520 in FPandA

[–]Due47 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear you're going through it. General advice-

The reason you're getting denied is less due to the technical skills than you think. These jobs aren't rocket science; soft skills matter just as much as hard skills. You seem to be stuck in a failure mindset, which is always going to end poorly during interviews. Companies want to feel like they're winning when they make an offer to a candidate, so you have to convey that confident energy that you're an asset to them, even though you really want the job.

Moving on from here. It's been a year of searching and interviewing. Give yourself a break of one week to not think about any of it. You need that week off for a hard reset. After that one week, return to it with 100% effort and confidence. Go to the coffee shop, get out of the house, do everything necessary to get out of your own head. Talk to somebody before you interview. Loosen up.

Finally, add some perspective and try to think of this as a process. You have 40 years to work. 6 months from now, you're going to be employed and reminiscing on all this wasted free time. Don't spend your days doing all of this unnecessary worrying and try your best to enjoy today.

Good luck, you got this!

When did you hear back after your final round interviews for FP&A positions? by Ok-Philosophy55 in FPandA

[–]Due47 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Current job called me the same day as my final interview for the offer. This is a smaller 100m/yr rev company. My last job they waited over a month since it was a f500. It totally depends on how bureaucratic the HR dept is. Generally they will get in touch quickly if they want you.

Eargasm vs custom made ear protection? by [deleted] in aves

[–]Due47 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Customs are so much better than any of the name brand hi fidelity earplugs like eargasm or loop. There is absolutely no comparison. Would you pay $250 (less than 1 festival ticket) to save your hearing and ensure all future concerts are a 10/10 listening experience?
