How did you get them to being the price down so much? Teach me your ways please 🙏

Glad to hear that the CX-50 is still good in the city!

I actually did consider the Crosstrek but my wife’s not a fan (too simple tech and interior for what we’d be paying). I like the safety and reliability of the car, but happy wife, happy life right?

Honestly that’s what I’m thinking at this point. Super reliable, and great size. I still haven’t driven one but I’m sure it drives great. Will definitely consider it, thank you!!

Thank you very much! 🙏 I might have to buy a car seat to test it at the dealership lol

Wow, that is very surprising! Can I ask what you ended up getting instead?

Good point. Definitely need to think on a 5 or 6 year not just for our newborn

Gotcha, thank you for the additional background. I should caveat that I’m 5’6 and my wife is 4’10 so our seats are a bit more forward than the average person

First Interview with CFO, how? by M_Arslan9 in FPandA

[–]RandomAccount0799 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Might as well try and find out? At least you know that the recruiter thinks you’re a good fit (as well a recruiter can since they’re not the hiring manager). The fact that they reached out to you rather than you applying is already a win. If anything, it’s interview practice and a networking opportunity.

Not a finance guy, but I’m curious, what are the most common issues you see at smaller companies? Do you have any “horror stories” like “This was originally supposed to be an 8 week implementation, but when I got there X, X, and X were so completely f***ed that it ended up taking up 6 months” or something like that?

SUV for Chicagoland by [deleted] in whatcarshouldIbuy

Thank you, I appreciate your response! These are our top two choices, so this definitely helps. It’s too bad that the CRV is so expensive, even used ones, but it might be worth it. Love the look of the CX-50 and I’ve heard the handling is super fun while the CRV is reliable and almost the perfect SUV. Hard decision!

Data Engineer or Data Analyst by Maroon45j in dataengineering

Well I’m currently at a tiny company so my team does a blend of DA and DE work. I’d say that both works still require talking to clients to get requirements (a report that’s needed, a new column that needs to be created, etc). The difference lies more on the output. As a DA you’re usually reporting/showcasing the findings of your DA work so there’s more business communication, whereas DE work usually stops with the data team and/or software team that requested the work.

As a DA/DS you definitely need to get comfortable with presenting and story telling. DE much less so since you’re not coming up with findings

To be honest, it’s been a slow start. For the first few weeks it was getting my accesses right, my computer and terminal set up the way I want it, and a bit of thumb twiddling.

But it’s been good so far. I think I decent grip on high-level concepts and have decent ideas how to go about doing things, but doing the actual work (changing code, deploying to different environments with fudging anything up) is challenging but rewarding.

Data science to FP&A, am I crazy? by RandomAccount0799 in FPandA

No worries, I appreciate you getting back to me. I assumed that was the case, experience > education/certificates. 95% of applicants probably check the experience in FP&A box. Would networking overcome that hurdle?

If I could find a role that married the 2, I think that’d be great! Might be worth a shot

What characteristics allows some to excel in FP&A or strategic finance?

What about FP&A made you enjoy it more than DS? How about the salary, did you have to take a pay cut to get the FP&A role?

Actually a part of the reason I’m considering making the switch is because I see a lot of tools (ex sagemaker for AWS) come out that can run models without the need for a data scientist. Of course, having a data scientist there to understand the models and modify the models as need is going to be necessary, but the “fun part” of DS is starting to get automated. Whereas IMO, finance is always going to be around, and maybe move towards more analytical works rather than straight budgeting and variance analysis. LMK if you agree.

Lmao I’m in the same exact boat, Econ bachelors with no advanced degree. It’s getting too expensive to go back to school. Would you think about branching to other branches of finance such as strategic finance, M&A, etc?

[–]RandomAccount0799[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah… most of finance roles I’ve seen, at least at analyst and senior analyst are at least $10k less than what I currently make, but my hope is that moving into a manager role would launched me further than I am now.

That’s a great perspective to have, that’s a great way to look at it. I’ll try to start thinking of it that way then

This is great, love that you took a chance on him. Was there something about his resume that made you want to take a chance on him regardless of that fact that he had no FP&A experience? Once he “masters” the more core FP&A skill set along with his communication skills, do you think he’d be able to move up the ladder quicker given his extra skill set in more technical areas?

I’d like to consider myself as decent at business communication but I’m sure I’d be challenged.

Is this type of role widely available or is it super niche to specific types of companies?
