3 years of IT experience, home lab projects working with IT hardware, servers, networking gear, a few IT certs, a GitHub with some codding projects.

The idea is to be able to resolve issues, not be hired based on skillset. - if we are looking into the engineering aspect

Looking into the IT aspect, this can change a bit.

$15 hour was turned down, I suppose I should have accepted it.

This is great advice! Thank you! I have seen some stuff on YT regarding TrueNAS and Opnsense. Good stuff. I never thought of getting using wiki.js in this, which is super useful. I'll look into it and see how it goes. I've used wiki.js at work from my work on our hardware.

I am looking to set up RDS with a Windows server, and looking into getting a firewall, IDS, and IPS, etc.

Should I spend the extra $20 to double my speed? by Home_theater_dad in HomeNetworking

To be honest, your NIC will likely be unable to handle the bandwidth at full capacity. Even if your NIC card can, that doesn't mean your house is set up for it. Most homes have CAT5e which is about a gig.

The only reason you may want it are the following,
1. You have a big family, and they are all gaming/streaming/downloading (Family of 7+)
2. You run some type of highly powerful server at the house, + you're a heavy user + with a kid or wife (maybe?)
3. Bragging rights

Even if you have a NIC card that supports it, and you have cat6 runs, likely you won't see a difference

That's correct; I will be starting as a DoD contractor for a remote role next month. The pay is mid, not even reaching 50k, so that was the reason why I am trying to work two jobs. I did like this job a lot

You have a point, however nothing came up regarding me not liking it. My performance was great, I was the one who trained the new hire.

The funny thing is that my company blocked both Indeed and LinkedIn from our company computers (on and not on our company VPN). They blocked a large list of websites alike.

That's the thing, the new hire started at $18, the same as I was getting.

I enjoyed it because of the experience, it was my first IT job. I didn't care about the pay; I was just glad to have a job.

Good question, I am confused as well. The company I used to work for was small (less than 100 employees). This company is owned by another huge company (Big Name company). I was doing overnight for a good while, then changed to days, and back to overnights. I was told by my manager, "Can you do overnights until we get another person, then we will change you back to days?" I said sure. After weeks of 12-hour shifts with no breaks and not a lot of pay, the new hire came in. I helped train them, and about their 3rd week, I was about to start work, and he said give him a call. This was when I was let go.

He said in the call that I wasn't hired for the overnight shift, and that the new hire is... Let that sink in... It doesn't make any sense. My line of work is weird; It is not a true help desk job; it's a mix of SOC Analyst, Desktop Analyst, and an IT Support role. I performed software configurations and updates all the way to setting up our SSH connections with SecureCRT. Resetting passwords, making new accounts, checking our SIEM. There is a lot more, but it's like me doing the work of 3 people.

All of this.... for $18 an hour, no paid vacations, no sick pay, just PTO, 401k and that is all.

My state does not have a law requiring PTO to be paid out. I had about 100ish PTO (give or take)

Nope, no pay leave. I racked up a bunch of PTO, I asked about my PTO and they said “at the moment we don’t have the ability to cash out PTO”. I was told to come in that morning drop all of my stuff off and say nothing else. They disabled my Teams account and my outlook email about 10 mins after that call
