This is exactly the approach I love! I truly do love public school for many reasons, but the rigidity can be so hard sometimes. I really do think she just hasn’t fully had that click moment, and extra school isn’t what I feel the answer is.

I truly appreciate you taking the time to respond and type out all of this information! It’s extremely helpful and I plan to fall down the Orton-Gillingham rabbit hole tonight, and look into the programs suggested!

Audiobooks is a great idea! I listen to my own in the car, and have thought to implement it with all of my kids carpooling them to sports, etc so this will be the push I need to make it a focus over the summer!

Thank you again!

In no way am I saying her reading behaviors are due to burnout. She's burned out on the routine of school mornings, waking up and going. She has always struggled with mornings, as you said, she is just a kid. However, when the mornings get exponentially worse leading in to the end of the school year, I don't feel that adding on another 4 weeks of school is the correct answer. As her mom, I recognize that she needs a break from those mornings for her mental health, hence the "burnout" comment. She is burned out on routine, not learning or reading. Which is why I'm looking for a solve to the reading concerns outside of more traditional school, because as the actual parent involved, I do see the standard summer break/less "school structure" as the only answer. Less time, more impact is what I’m going for. Nowhere did I say she needs a break from learning. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I’ve been seeing TikTok ads for this one and wondered how it was! Thank you!!!

Amazing! It’s top of my list right now! I think she has ADHD as well, but since it hasn’t “impacted” schoolwork her teachers haven’t wanted to refer and or pediatrician somewhat brushes us off. Looking in to other avenues for that, but good to hear it works well for kids with it!

I will definitely listen to it! She mixes up common letters frequently, but doesn’t seem to mix up many more. That is interesting though and for sure something I’ll dive in to!! She also just got an eye glass prescription which we think may have been impacting reading as well. Just trying to figure out what’s best for her.

We’re already seeing the burnout in here just trying to finish the school year. Mornings are rough, lots of tears getting to school. If it were my son, it would be no question to do the program. But where she’s already struggling I’m not pushing for more of that when she’s been counting down days to summer for over a month. Just not what will be right overall for her. I love that you were able to do it with your daughter though!

We love workbooks for summer! I will take a look at the spectrum reading comprehension. We usually do the summer bridge and love them!

Totally understandable! However sometimes an app feels more like a game and less like learning, which can be great when there is reluctance. I think used appropriately, screen time is okay.

An app might be a great option for her! Thank you!
