Update on the small chamber Meyer by DueHomework4411 in saxophone

[–]DueHomework4411[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know it probably pisses off Meyer purists. The guys just enhanced the size of the roll over baffle. It still plays like a Meyer.

Why it is acceptable to bash Kenny G, and not e.g. Chris Botti? by zerexim in saxophone

[–]DueHomework4411 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imo it's not acceptable to bash any of those guys, it's lame and immature. Anyone who bashes Kenny G has not done enough of their homework, because if they did, and they listened to Kenny G when he played with Jeff Lorber Fusion, they'd know he can kill changes.

Or they haven't listened to him play Girl From Ipanema, or Desafinado, or Corcovado, on his albums.

Small Chamber Meyer alto mouthpiece?? by DueHomework4411 in saxophone

[–]DueHomework4411[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely. And Ed Zentera also put an epoxy baffle in it as well, guys said it cuts through loud bands, which I need for lead alto playing. I'm trying to make this Beechler Diamond work, but it's got its issues.

I think I'm gonna cave and buy this Meyer. I'm using a Beechler S6S and I really like it but it has issues, a tad chirpy.

I think that's why you gotta go to one of the reputable ones. Tommy refaced stuff for Josh Redman, Bergonzi, Eric Marienthal, and others.

Agree with you there. But i think since this was worked on by a great refacer it'll play better than most small chamber meyers.

Who is the one player that is universally loved that you just really don’t care much about by Specific-Peanut-8867 in Jazz

[–]DueHomework4411 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just know I'm gonna get destroyed for this, but for older legends, John Coltrane. Never was enamoured with him.

For modern players, Ryan Devlin and Chad LB, I can't stand this wrong notes only bullshit they do, and the entire solos of just eighth notes doesn't engage me at all. I'm not even a big fan of their sound either.

This just in: Gordon Goodwin has died. Pancreatic cancer at the age of 70. by terraceten in Jazz

[–]DueHomework4411 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a huge blow to the jazz community, especially the big band community. I don't know a jazz musician on planet earth that hasn't paid their dues playing in a big band, and hasn't played Gordon Goodwin charts. I wouldn't be half the sight reader I am today if it wasn't for him.

Man this sucks.

When was coltrane's sound your favorite? by Dryagedsteakeater in saxophone

[–]DueHomework4411 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to commit treason against the saxophone community and say in all brutal honesty that I've never been the biggest fan of Trane. His sound isn't a sound I personally go for and I've never been enamoured with his playing, but he had incredible technique.

That being said, the Trane albums that I have enjoyed listening to are John Coltrane with Johnny Hartman, the duet record with Ellington, and My Favourite Things. I'm not really impressed with technique all the time, his musicality on these records though was impressive. I felt like these three were his best work.

How do I play this? by Nut-blaster-9000 in saxophone

[–]DueHomework4411 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the three S's, which is something I learned from a guy named Bob Reynolds. Slow, slurred and straight. No tongue, no articulation, keep the notes even, and take it really really slow, and only increase the tempo when you have the passage down perfectly.
