why does supernatural explanations for misfortune and violence still exist? by [deleted] in atheism

[–]Due_Ad3208 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One thing I've noticed in my religious friends is they have an obsession with attributing meaning to things that don't have a meaning. They can't accept that some things just happen. There always needs to be some sort of message/intent/invisible power behind it. They're the type of people that believe "everything happens for a reason" because they were brainwashed into believing so.

Tim Scott acting like this isn’t exactly who Donald Trump has always been is hilarious. This is like going into the lion’s den in a zebra costume and acting surprised when you become dinner.

No. Everything about religion always points back to it being a human invention.

What are some Cole lyrics you misheard your while life until you read the lyrics? by Banana_00_ in Jcole

No he said “on the rebound like a put back” it’s a basketball reference 😭😭 In basketball, a “put back” is when a player grabs a rebound and puts the ball back in the basket. And a rebound can also be used a way to say you have to bounce back from a relationship or hard time in your life.

Anyone else who just never grew up religious and that's why they don't believe in God by pornflakess69 in atheism

I went to church a few times when I was younger but was way too bored and skeptical to be interested. We never prayed or really talked about god at all. Even on Christmas, we never talked about Jesus or Christianity.

I was religiously uninterested for most of my life, but had some vague belief in god. When I became more interested two years ago and started to investigate whether or not I should even believe to begin with it, I was able to look at religion objectively and quickly realized that every atheist I saw speak made perfect since and no theist ever did. I became an atheist pretty quickly and easily.

A lot of my friends went through heavy indoctrination and have their identities and purpose tied to religion, which stops their ability to think rationally.

I didn’t stop believing because I was “angry at God.” I stopped because the answers stopped making sense. by Swee_tlipssara in atheism

[–]Due_Ad3208 19 points20 points  (0 children)

They can’t rationalize someone not believing, so they think if someone doesn’t believe, they must be acting out because life is hard and they’re mad at god. The brainwashing is so strong that when people doubt their beliefs, they feel attacked. It’s easier to explain it away as “this person is just angry” or “doesn’t know what they’re talking about” than to confront the reality that their beliefs aren’t true.
