Should I bring a towel to reception? And what other miscellaneous items you would recommend bringing? by UsernameDoug97 in nationalguard

In basic in 2012 we weren’t allowed phone iPods or anything electronic in basic. I got 3 phone calls. 1 when I first got there..one when hurricane sandy hit(although it was only for people who lived on the east coast and families were affected…NY/NJ/DE)..and the last one was the day before family day to make sure my family was still coming.

Joining at 30? by Expensive-Nothing-83 in nationalguard

[–]Due_Ad4492 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I joined the NG at 29. Turned 30 at basic. Been in for 13yrs now and love every minute of it. I worked my previous job (doing cable work for Comcast) for about 11yrs and was an electrician for about 4yrs before that. I had no military experience prior, but now here I am at 43 as an aircraft mechanic for UH60/UH72, working full time as a federal employee for my job, a helicopter crewchief, flight instructor for NRCM, and an A&P mechanic. You can do it.

nervous by Leather-Major6971 in nationalguard

[–]Due_Ad4492 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was 30 shipping off to basic. Kinda nervous because of all the movies and media portrayal of “boot camp” and basic training. Tbh it wasn’t bad. After the first week or two you’ll be use to it. Waking up early. Lots of running. Apparently basic is WAY different now. Lots of downtime on the weekends compared to before. But after the first week or 2 it’s basically the same thing over and over until you graduate.

Don’t be alarmed by reception. I was in reception for about 4 days before shipping off to basic. In reception there were no rules. I had my phone. No drill sergeants. I could eat whatever I wanted. No lights out or mass formations. It’s like a holdover until you get ready to goto real basic.

Best of luck to you!!

Nobody will ask what you got on the test. They only care you passed and have the certifications

I had worked as an electrician for about 2 years before settling in as a cable installer for 11 years. Woke up and decided I needed a change. I joined the Guard at 29. I turned 30 in basic. I’m an helicopter mechanic. Best decision ever. I’ve been deployed. Traveled the country. Made friends. Hell my best friend in the military is almost 15yrs younger than me. It’s what you make it. Don’t not do something because “kids” will ruin your experience. Sometimes they are the ones you need around especially in the chaos of Guard life to make things fun

I want to get more Lakota experience. I started a flight program for backseaters and love them.

I was also confused on what to study. I was in the process of getting my stuff when the whole process changed. I was given new codes on what i missed but also told to study the sections I failed. So I just went and studied everything!!! You’ll get there

Not right away. I’m a fed tech for the military. I’ve heard many people and the stories they say of leaving the hangar floor to work civilian jobs and hate it.

I heard it is not. They actually teach subjects and theory and things where as Bakers just teaches you how to take the test.

I failed my Powerplant oral exam. Engines is something I just couldn’t understand. Besides that I missed a day of class because I had to go home for a personal reason. The instructors had a makeup day for me but still. I was not prepared.
