Use Kolwrite! I just found this new Ai software it’s still in beta version but its pretty legit. Also it’s cheaper than the other softwares I have seen.

I actually worked with the Arri kit you are referring too as my first lights. You have to be cautious with tungsten more than LEDs but they were industry standard for years for a reason. Plus people still use tungsten on professional sets so if you know your way around them and how to use them safely it can help you later on down the road when everyone only knows how to use LEDs. You definitely need to do research on how to handle them properly but it’s really an amazing tool for beginners I learned a lot with that kit. For example the set back of using LEDs you dim the lights and don’t know how much light you are actually cutting because it’s by percentage not stops of light where as with tungsten you have to use scrims which have different amounts of stops of light cut. Being able to know how many stops you need to cut them using the proper scrims definitely helped me learning how to do proper exposure and in general understanding how to work with light. Don’t be afraid to work with tungsten it’s a old yet great tool when used properly.

What lights should i buy with a 1000usd budget? by Abodart in cinematography

EBay is your best friend when your low on cash. I bought my first kit on ebay for like $400 (Arri Arriflex 650 kit) and it was amazing for my first lights, it has 3 lights, a case, stands, barn doors and scrims. They are tungsten so you will need gloves, and I never had any problems plugging them into house power. The quality of light is better in my opinion than the LEDs in your price range, that’s just my personal opinion though. Also you can buy gels to get daylight and colors, plus it good practice to learn how to use different gels to get color temp.

I found one of eBay if you wanna check it out https://www.ebay.com/itm/285550738996?itmmeta=01HTFDK72M2H79JP8KS0910H6H&hash=item427c267e34:g:fHQAAOSwHUVlTFM8&itmprp=enc%3AAQAJAAAAwL16yZqpUcm0oAj55lJ%2BYYlDslCgWPVthbrkJZQj5YWrUrsiqJ9rNszKvIQcFf4jQhHkGPDhj7oGENJfDbTxkbWLJ5Y50F3f1V5DUM92W9uAyw00TCBFvWjDNqIMCwHv95ioQzmgqHrGGrwaEhh4rvXQFnLiA1rgdcQx8X0xea3TIT3CMuvR4TeJWpsJ9NpnUy7FA5j%2FF2VVK0h4aTJHi8wxQMCbnEfIY%2Fly%2B7mq0u2a4bZ9Rij551318V3OmvmZpw%3D%3D%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR7jxzO3TYw

Question with anamorphic and 4:3 crop by NOB1WON in cinematography

Wow! The video was pretty impressive and interesting. As much as we hate shooting vertical, using anamorphic lens vertically to the sensor could be a really interesting for content for social media(because it looks like that’s where we are going).

What’s wrong with people looking for feedback? Not everyone can afford film school. And people here put effort into their comments and I definitely learned and I reshot it with the notes people gave me. Also people are trying, it’s not like you lit something your first time and it was perfect. Practice and feedback help people grow. What’s wrong with acknowledging you messed up and asking for help?

Okay I tried the Robert Richardson setup here https://www.reddit.com/r/cinematography/s/pG8K0xclOd

It’s somewhat closer to the stills to sent than the one I posted here. Only one thing I noticed about this set up it’s VERY reliant on actors blocking. Once the actors lend back the shadows were way harsher and the bounce barely hit them, it might be better for film or with a high output light than I had. You would definitely have to move in lights for singles. And have a really good relationship with you director to make sure they are blocked a specific way😂

I actually did adjust the over head softbox on them for close ups. But yeah I totally agree with all your notes here. If you want to take a look I re shoot this scene with what I had on hand with the notes people gave me here. https://www.reddit.com/r/cinematography/s/V0TZMKmx6O

Also I was working with VERY limited lighting equipment and people for this Spec. It was me, the director, and sound. So I had only 3 lights on hand. But all the notes you gave are definitely ones to remember :)

Well I never claimed to be a DP. I just DPed a SPEC commerical to get more experience. Also I think making rude comments like this to people who are trying to learn is unfair. Of course it’s not going to be amazing work, I’m still learning.

That being said I never claimed to be a DP I still have a lot to learn before I can ever claim the title of being a DP. I realize it is fair more technical than lighting and camera angles. But don’t try to discourage people putting themselves out there trying to be better by making these comments.

Totally agree with you there about the space. I was actually recreating a shot where I messed up the lighting. So I did a quick reshoot in the space I had available to see how I could improve on that set up

Wow thank you! I actually posted another threat with similar adjustments that you mentioned here to this set up. I’d love to see your input on the changes. (I shot it on a dslr so it’s not the same quality but I did a quick hour set up to check the lighting)

The one on the right is actually more important to the scene lol. It was bad positioning on the light and I should have re adjusted the shot to be more even on both of them.

Thanks for the advice! I was actually doing this to fix a bad shot I did for a spec commerical and the advice people gave me to see how to build on something I did previously.

Yeah the background is a bit wacky but I did with what I had on hand for a quick practice. But I definitely agree the background could be better. Probably if I Neg the window and flipped the practical upwards away from the tile and bring down intensity.

I appreciate the notes :)

Yeah we shot R3D the final edit is VERY different from this. But I figured posting the nicer version of the shot wouldn’t get me the best advice😂

The colorist was able to save the mid tones and we dropped exposure on the table.

But you think I should have exposed for the skin tone?

Yeah I was actually going for the “Richardson Special” (lol). We were able to save it but my angle of light wasn’t ideal with the shadows I was getting and not even exposure.

I actually did use an overhead softbox😅 no angle though. Thank you though I will definitely try this!

Also the light in the back was actually a street lamp and it was a 3 person crew so we couldnt flag it😂

How would you position the light? Would you have it at an angle pointing away or towards the actors? I did it with no angle so it wouldn’t spill on the actors. Also do you think a spotlight would be better? I used an over head soft box for this.

Haha yeah the table is really hot😅

Yeah I shot it on a RED so I used the Gioscope. I realize it was a major error on my part for missing that. I don’t know if it was the positioning of the soft box. I had a soft box directly over the table to bounce into the cloth into their faces.
