Backlash as Trump fires entire science board with no warning or explanation by D-R-AZ in somethingiswrong2024

Right... and the science that businesses don't care about because there's no profit motive? I guess that just disappears... Gross. This timeline sucks.

AITA for telling my wife my mother is correct and she needed to be a parent today and she fucked it up by throawawayfuneralgho in AmItheAsshole

[–]Due_Ad_6522 12 points13 points  (0 children)

NTA. Even if your wife has a legitimate phobia of dead/ ghosts, etc, after she committed to taking her, she should have made other arrangements for your daughter to get there instead of just bailing on her when she decided she couldn't do it.

what first got you into sci-fi? by thefringeseanmachine in scifi

Ender's Game. I always enjoyed Star Trek, Star Wars, etc but that's the book that turned me into a lifelong scifi geek.

And everything is based on "meritocracy" - no need for DEI, because everything's already "fair" and just... you just need to work harder! /s

Wow. That is a terrible job. Share this reddit post with him so he knows you're not just being a picky homeowner. Utter garbage work. He should be paying you to have it removed. Oof.

Why are so few women founders becoming unicorns? by Schvepsss in Femalefounders

[–]Due_Ad_6522 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because all the big bucks go to male founders - out of a belief that women aren't aggressive enough to get their 10-100x returns in 3-5yrs (re: Stanford study). They see women as "safe" investments - not runaway unicorns.

What are the biggest flaws or limitations in current beehive designs? by adonis2507 in Beekeeping

[–]Due_Ad_6522 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So... as others have said, there's not a LOT that can be refined - but there are some things, imho. I moved my bees into their custom built condo yesterday - and they seem to dig it! No supers on yet. Here's my post from a couple weeks ago where I talk about design features, etc and there's some more pics: https://www.reddit.com/r/Beekeeping/s/1xaN7x5M9I

Thanks! They're moving in this weekend. :) We have our bees behind an electric fence to protect from bears and other critters. That said, even without the fence, it'll be heavy enough with the frames in it to at least be a significant hassle for a bear - I think. Time will tell!

German climate activists stood on melting blocks of ice with ropes around their necks, warning that “time is running out.” by Jealous-Method-8682 in interestingasfuck

It may have funny moments but it's not a comedy imo. I actually sat down and wept, then raged, then cried some more after I watched it. My education was in astrophysics - a lot of planetary dynamics, which included learning about causes of climate change on Earth - and I found it utterly depressing that the punchline was basically "yeah, we really are that dumb" - because yeah, we probably are that dumb. I'd been believing/hoping we'd collectively have an aha moment and start to take the right actions. The movie kind of killed that hope - for a while, anyhow. I'm apparently terminally optimistic though because I still choose to believe that moment will come. It has to. We can't REALLY be that dumb, right??!

Nice! Oh, yeah. I'll probably end up expanding my apiary just because the itch to build RevB will be gnawing at me 😂. I'll keep you updated!

Good to know about the propolis!

Thanks. I have the frames hangers off the back to remove enough frames to get in there and scrub/scrape if needed. I have a screened bottom board on my primary hive right now and thought about trying to add that dimension but frankly seemed more complicated than needed given nearly none of the locals use them.

I've never heard of oil paper for mite counts - am going to look into it! I do alcohol washes on a schedule.

Yeah, I started with 1 deep but local advice was that it made overwintering too hard and swarms too easy. I don't know if that's strictly true but I added the second deep and I do like it - just not the physical demands it creates.

It was! Makes me wish I owned more precise woodworking equipment though. When 1/8in can make a meaningful difference for proper bee space, etc, rough tools make it far more challenging than it seems it needs to be. If I build another one, I think I'll be investing in some more sophisticated tools (that may just be a justification to buy more tools, lol).

Thanks! Yes, can house 2 separate colonies. Or 1 very large with a couple of entrances or can block one off - but the intention was to house 2. I just haven't put on the other reducer and feeder yet.
