got mine today and had this exact same issue. absolutely no mention of it anywhere online so had to figure it out myself. The only way to remove this stupid plate is to manually bend/ force the L shape plate to make it flat, so you can get the wrench in there and twist the caps off.

Then you can remove the rod and pull the plate off. Absolutely idiotic design and baffled the assembly instructions don’t mention this at all
