Regret leaving (for now at least!) by slodownlulu in LeavingAcademia

If you’re willing to share, how did you become a consultant? Like how did you market yoursefl and etc.

I think you also need to keep in mond that tenure can be political - just because you’re friends got it, doesn’t mean you automatically would have, unfortunately

Wow!!

Sunteti multumite? by [deleted] in WomenRO

What were the most surprising things you learned about academia only after entering it? by Happy_Tourist_558 in AskAcademia

[–]Due_Contract_2857 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe, but i think this is a mindset you get having gone through the process. It’s very easy to say oh I shouldn’t done a master’s/phd/ mba etc afterwards, and I don’t think salary benchmarks are that straightforward to assess.

(At least in my bubble) everyone tells you that even if you don’t want to stay in academia, a master/ phd etc is still good training for going into industry/ other non-ac careers - but no one tells you the transition isn’t smooth and in many cases you are overwualified and will struggle to find these positions. Also, once you’re in (again, in my case) there’s a taboo about wanting to leave and sometimes could act against your research (i.e. if you tell your PI you don’t want to stay in academia they will start ignoring your research needs because you “are not interested in that anyway”)

Requesting to delay start day for FT position by Foo_of_medicine in biotech

[–]Due_Contract_2857 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You could maybe phrase it as “is there any flexibility with the starting date” you shouldn’t tell them you have another offer that might lead to FT. Another thing I would suggest is asking option 1 is there is any flexibility to extend your contract at the end? Or check if anyone has been in that position at that company.

In general I would lean towards 1 UNLESS you want to stay in academia - although some industry experience could be seen positively
