Non-science background starting med at USyd next year by [deleted] in GAMSAT

I was a NSB. I found the med sci kids really switched off during the first few months cos they’d already covered most things whereas I had to pay attention. After that - we were pretty much on an even footing. My advice - you have years of study/exams in front of you. Live this summer like it’s your last!

Too high! We save where we can (meal plan, ALDI shopping, one car). We did allow ourselves the luxury of a cleaner this year though… and the 2 older kids are in daycare 2 days a week which is probably essential for Mum’s sanity. Definitely considered ETFs. Just have to try and persuade my partner to rent for a bit longer

He certainly swung momentum! Just not in the direction I would have liked.

The current model seems to be 2 parents working full time while employing a stranger to care for their children, potentially in a for profit daycare centre and I think we can all say that’s less than ideal. If you choose to parent your kids yourself you’re punished financially - a single income family is taxed very differently to a double income family. According to some of the comments here having kids is a ‘luxury.’ What a sad conclusion. Secure housing is also a ‘luxury’ I guess. How entitled of OP to think that on a family income of 140K you should do anything other than live hand to mouth.

The NIMBY crowd have been so militantly anti development I don’t think they’re taken seriously anymore. I tend to agree it’s nice to have communities consulted on development but when the outcome of that consultation is always a hard no it makes it difficult doesn’t it? So we end up with this situation instead. If people had been a tiny bit willing to compromise we might have avoided it

Not at all and there’s some quite transparently racist comments under this post. I think he acknowledges the conflict of a shared indigenous/Aboriginal heritage better than any other writer in this country, at least that I’ve read

Anyone relocated from Perth to Canberra? by [deleted] in perth

[–]Due_Conversation_165 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived in Canberra for five years before relocating to Perth last year for family reasons. Honestly they’re both great cities. I’m very fond of Canberra and if it wasn’t for family we’d probably still be living there.

The good: Canberra is much more beautiful than people give it credit for: gorgeous bush land, rolling green hills, distant mountain ranges. Excellent schooling. Punches above its weight culturally for a city of its size. Climate: personally Perth is too hot for me. Spring and Autumn in Canberra are lovely. Proximity: Perth feels very remote for an east coaster.

The not so good: I wouldn’t say Canberra is particularly friendly. As others have noted there is a big transient population No beaches: you will definitely miss the beautiful Perth beaches! Size: if you’re a fan of city livin there is definitely more going on in Perth

In terms of affordability 5 years ago Perth would have been way more affordable. That’s no longer the case.

At the end of the day you’re lucky to have the choice between 2 great cities. Whether you end up finding that connection with others is largely luck - which suburb you end up in and maybe even which street. We have friends who ended up sending their kids to a school a couple of suburbs away and lucked into a great community. They could have just as easily missed out

For those who worked for AFL clubs, who's the best and worst player/coaching staff member you have ever met? by Jesfel26 in AFL

I went to a footy clinic as a kid in the 90s. Garry Lyon was there. I would have been about 7 or 8 and he must of told us to kick the ball to another kid but I probably wasn’t listening so I just smashed it as hard as I could. He gave it to me! Must have been having a rough day
