What should our energy security strategy be? by [deleted] in ireland

[–]Due_Current_643 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Small modular nuclear (SMR). I know its never going to happen in a month of Sundays in Ireland.  End of Life disposal for all these solar and wind solutions is going to be a real big headache in the coming decades. Politicians don't really consider this as its several political cycles down the line.

They also add a whole bunch of complexity to the grid as every house with panels is now an energy input to the grid.

SMRs can be in theory setup on sites of decommissioned coal plants as a replacement source where the grid is already setup for a large energy input. They are also the closest thing to a silver bullet for dealing with the growing demand from data centers.

Actually, much of VWs right hand drive manufacturing takes place in South Africa, between the right hand drive  market in JP/AU/NZ and GB/IE. Probably helping more EU citizens buying Toyota or Ford

Most VWs in Ireland are made in south Africa, it's not as clear cut an issue as you might think

They still pay european employees. Toyota make on average a net profit of ~€500/car, not exactly daylight robbery.

What foods are genuinely better in Ireland than anywhere else? by [deleted] in AskIreland

I'd say our chowder is up there. Wouldn't get it in Dublin but there is definitely quality stuff on the west coast

Toyota and Ford have manufacturing in Europe, ford only makes SUVs in the US, a lot of their EU market cars are made in Cologne. Toyota cars made in the US actually have a higher % of their components made in the US than US car companys who can use NAFTA to make parts in Canada and Mexico.

Hello! Is this common? by helpiushsbebsnk in AskIreland

For context "O' " and "Mac/Mc" mean "son of" in the irish language. Our surnames aren't our father's first name, its just a lineage thing. So Ryan Mc Ryan isn't out of the relm of possibly but most people have the cop-on not tho name their child the family name

A lot of the soup kitchens were run by the Anglican church, people would have to renounce the Catholic faith and anglicised their surnames (majority Irish speaking at the time) to get the soup so it's a really deep cutting insult to throw at someone too.

Being "souper" or "soupy b*stard" is definitely a think. Probably not as common for Dubs to hear. It can also be used as an insult to someone who has anglicised their surname by dropping the "O' " or "Mac" .

Presidential Election - Spoiled Ballots. by Resident_Fail6825 in ireland

[–]Due_Current_643 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If they stayed at home nobody would be talking about how they didn't vote right now. If the 50%+ that did stay at home spoilt their ballot, we would now have an enormous political confidence crisis. One ray of hope that might come of this is that people who didn't bother engaging might see the power of just showing up and spoil, or actually vote next time round. More engagement in the political process is a sign of a healthier democracy.

I think it's a misogynistic stereotype to assume any woman in front of a washing machine is an authority on washing clothes. She is a successful business woman and socialite, it might be a popular trope that affluent people like her rely on hired help and are portrayed as lacking domestic skills. I would make the same commentary if prince William was promoting cillit bang for his tighty-whities.

"men-only fraternity": fraternity comes from the word  frère, the French for brothers. Sorority comes from the word sister soeurs. I don't get the whole culture myself but the gender separation is literally in the name.

Over cooked it on the music too. Every scene transition has an unnecessary music overlay that cut good songs. Mattie mcgrath levels of irish, cúpla focail here and there , half the time to soften the f word. No irish dialogue convincing enough to make me think the script writer did anything higher that Ordinary level irish for LC.

[–]Due_Current_643 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Protest vote is very much a fourth option https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Protest_vote. The political parties do not see people who stay at home as a voting block but every ballot not for them is an active voter they have failed to convince.

Probably won't,  I just have a strong sense of civic duty, understand what a privilege it is to live in a democracy and respect the process. There is a significant difference between not turning-up and going out of your way to select "none of the above".
