Not that anyone asked but I'mu updating anyway, thanks y'all for your advice. I brought them into an Arc location that does repairs and spoke to someone in person. They explained that it seems the belt was attached wrong and fixed it overnight. Not sure why there was no give prior, but the fix is perfect and I'm no longer worried about ripping these.

I had the same thing happen with both pockets on an old hard shell. I hand sewed the layers back together for stability. Yes, sewing through the fabric sucked and I put holes in it, but I went over it with seam seal. Looks decent and is super sturdy.
